hi there
can anyone help, my rear shocker damping srew aduster has
snapped inside shocker so it just spins now does any one know if
this can be repaired or is it a new shock job . its stuck on hard.
(bmw standard shock 05}
cheers chris.

Last weekend I had exactly the same thing happen (55 plate). I spoke to Rainbow Motorcycles and the fix is a new shock.....£400 plus so I'm not impressed.

Common problem and non-repairable (I spoke to WP when mine broke).

Replaced both of mine with Ohlins (btw front isn't worth replacing imho).

On a recent thread someone on here had a shock for sale around 50 quid I think, gotta go out so havnt time to look it up...good luck :thumb2

Before you fork out for a new one it might be worth giving the guys below a ring.

My rear shock gave up the ghost earlier in the year and I was told I needed a new one.

Went to see these chaps and got it all regassed etc. for £80.

Top service.

Speak to either Andy or Simon.

Sounds like an excuse for a set of aftermarket jobbies :)

mine won't turn either.... I know it will go if I push it so have left it alone...

Shock is still 100% ok at 12k miles of mainly London humps, which is not bad actually and better than any of my previous bikes... I think its the height and suppleness of GS ride that helps....

I ll go Ohlins when the time comes... If BMW OE replacement is 400, spend 100 more and go top of the range me thinks...

There are also a couple of other good ones if you search the forum: WP and the ones with the blue springs (cannot remember firms name)

The front is actually very good - I noticed no major difference on fitting the Ohlin replacement and mine had done 36k+. Since on the 04/05 it's WP if I hadn't got my Ohlins at a bargain price I'd have bought the aftermarket WP rear and left the front alone.

You can not fix the screw problem - that is directly from WP who make the shock.

cheers for the info, got email back off them to say they can rebuild it
regards chris

I've just spoken to Andy (Firefox Racing) and the problem can be sorted. One week turn around and 85-100 quid....gets my vote.

Many thanks to Diversion74:thumb

Can anyone confirm who makes these units. Andy (Firefox Racing) mentioned Showa but I thought they where WP units.

I don't want to remove shocker and kart it up to West Yorks if its a different unit to what they are expecting......thanks in advance

WP that makes the 04 and 05 shock do not supply the part that is broke to anyone, and even if they did WP states the shock can not be repaired.

I remember taking to firefoxracing before WP and they said they couldn't repair it. Reconditioning a Showa shock as fitted to 06+ is not the same.

Give WP UK a call: http://www.wpsuspension.co.uk

i spoke to andy this morning too, i told him it was wp shock, his reply
was it doesent matter , wp or showa also spoke to wp uk who said
u canot get the parts to repair. they said speak to bmw.
this might have something to do with bmw not buying wp now. ?

it's probably to do with bmw contracting WP to build them a batch of cheap, basic, non servicable shocks to fit as OEM parts, and WP not wanting anything more to do with them :nenau

they don't look like any retail WP shocks i've ever seen.

I can confirm that Firefox can rebuild WP rear shocks because I'm riding around on one.
Mine didn't have a broken screw. It just died and lost all the oil however they definately knew what they were doing as they said they needed a short plug for regassing the shock due to the top fitting nice and snug in the frame.
They even offered to set the shock up if I needed any help.

Top blokes and definitely worth a punt imo for what it's worth.

Andy
