Anyone heard of a recall of the 1200GS for brake probs?

Mine are noisy when just about to stop. As they sound like an old bus. Have spoke to dealer (B/B at Crewe) they say BM are aware of this but as yet are doing nothing?

Anyone enlighten us?

There was a recall on a few early bikes to check and replace banjo bolts if there was any movement. It applied to only our first demo and there have been no other brake recalls since.

My 12 was serviced (1st) a couple of weeks ago and Jefferies were removing and cleaning the front pads as an extra item on the schedule free of charge.

I imagine that this was as per BWMs instruction.

Yeh B/B removed and cleaned my brakes up also at first sevice. Made no difference. Still gets everyone looking around to see where the noise is comming from. Maybe a new safety thing?

same here - they said it was done to quieten down the brakes...

.....

Mine also have a little sing song just as I am about to stop. The dealer has done a few of the mod's suggested but as they still make a noise they have suggested that the disc roller bits (sorry for not being to clear)but they should be coated and that should be the end of the noise.....................................fingers crossed !

a total recall i am not sure about, but what i do know is that i was supposed have picked my bike up last friday or today (monday) but due to a sudden recall on the brakes i am therefore having to wait until thursday/ friday before i can pick up my new toy. apparently this 'brake module' is being sent direct from germany. but what i don't get is if my bike was just recently built and delivered, then why should it need a recall?

you know what i am getting at? i have checked various sites for a recall on 12gs' and there are none apart from the early ones?

like i have mentioned on posts posted elsewhere on this site, i am a very suspiciously minded person. has the dealer damaged my bike and therefore awaiting the appropriate part to be replaced or is it really and genuinely a brake recall? but if it is a recall, how come it is only my bike which was built just very recently that has this problem? i don't see others posting a recall here?

my other theory is that the dealers are waiting for my cheque to clear and therefore made up some cock and bull about a brake recall?

not sure on this one, maybe have to give the bennefit of the doubt to the dealer.......maybe someone can shed some light on this?

Mine too makes a terrific noise when just coming to a stop. It was in for service last friday and dealer said BM are aware of this but do not currently have an answer.

The dealer said that they have had some sucess removing the pads and chamfering off the edge? Did it to mine, made no difference.

Im no engineer but I would say its possibly something to do with the compound in the pads, like its to hard and has become glazed. Also, maybe this is something to do with BM & rest of the market chasing the enviro/recylce directives to the enth. JMO.

My last bike made the same noise at the same speed pulling up and that was a varadero so by some chance the compound point may have some mileage.

Does not detract from the fantastic GS though, the more I ride the better it gets.

The dealer told me they were expecting bmw to change the pad compounds as it was too hard causing excessive squealing...

Just noticed another problem, sounds like my brakes are just touching the discs without being depressed - could hear a slight hiss when wheeling the bike out of the garage this morning - will have to check them before going home this evening - anyone else had this problem?

Same problem here , used to squeel like a pig .

However either I am getting used to the noise or as the miles pile up the noise is subsiding.

Small price to pay for the pleasure of riding the 1200gs

Mine has the same problem, the dealer checked it at the 600 service, they chamfered the pads, and the squeal has subsided a little, but at 2000 miles now, the squealing has subsided a little more.

Doesn't bother me or bystanders as squealing brakes isn't really out of place in the smog!

Hi Nadeem,
Don't worry about the pads touching the disk. All of my bikes and all of my cars have made the kind of noise you describe when pushing them with the engine off.

Yep, disc brakes are supposed to rub a small amount.

You can check if there's a problem by riding a couple of miles without using the brakes at all, then checking to see if the disc is hot. If it is - brakes are binding, otherwise - no problem.

recall

Mine had a recall 'check',apparently a bike that was on test on bmw's dynometer at the factory was leaking brake fluid at the rear brake pipe adapter(at end of swingarm)The clip wasnt located properly.Only afected oct 04-28 build bikes.

Still you can't beat the beemer...

Just had the nod...

...those awfully nice people at Motorrad Central have been in touch regarding a recall on my bike for the Banjo Bolts. I'll give them a call back tomorrow and sort out a visit. By the way the brakes appear to be fine with no squeeling or weeps..!!

Have Fun
