Recall of R1200GS with Integral Brakes (Continental) confirmed

Proof................

One way or another.......... BMW has dropped the inclusion of Integral Servo Assisted ABS across its model range

I agree. Most quirks of the GS I have grown to like/put up with. The servo brakes continue to annoy and I know that down the line there will be expensive repair when they go wrong. Why they had to invent a solution (servo brakes on a bike) to problem that never existed I will never understand. This morning (like so many others) I had to go through the start procedure 3 times before the self check decided that I didn't have 'brake failure' (quick flashing 'brake failure' and no servo rather than the correct slow flashing 'brake failure' that stops flashing after a few meters).

Yikes! My 05 came with hand guards but I took them off right away. . Yesterday I decided to put them back on and I immediately noticed that there is very little clearance between the guards and the end of the levers. Also noted that this distance is not adjustable because the levers can't be moved independently. Thought that this could be a problem under the right circumstances. So I took the bike for a ride and what happened? The servo stopped working on restart. After turning the switch off and on a few times the servo problem cleared. But what's next? I did have several serious brake failure problems early on, but those seemed to go away after the full wiring harness was changed under warranty. All this does not inspire confidence.

No, but something had to give and maybe all the legal stuff he reported on from the Fatherland did it................although he wasn't the instigator

Maybe it did, but we will never know. Or perhaps there were other reasons why they decided to go for the current sytem, as suggested by other posters in this thread. Whatever the reason, we as punters are not likely to find out the real reason why BMW chose to move on from the servo brakes and can do nothing more than speculate.

Spoke to my dealer earlier in the week. They stated that they had just been informed about the recall, but were waiting for replacement parts before booking relevent machines in.
Just looking back at the thread...this is regarding the possible brake fault, not the handguards.

Should I be too concerned

Got a letter on Saturday regarding the brake fault.

Booked in the bike today - apparently the work takes about an hour.

Booked in for next Friday - earliest they could fit me in.

Should I be worried about riding around on the bike for another 8 days?

Bike only has around 6000 miles. Do the brakes fail due to high milage or is it just random luck that decides that you have no stopping power.

The letter says failiure occurs in extreme conditions??? What does this mean?
- off road, hot/cold weather, emergency breaking from say 100mph!!!

Can anyone enlighten me :nenau

Well if my brakes failed I would describe the conditions as extreme however/wherever I was riding

All he has done is bring details of a recall to our notice. He has certainly not been proven right on his earlier "crusade".

I see. I tend to think that the recall and the fact that servo assist has been withdrawn probably indicates that there was a problem. But each of us can believe what we like :thumb2

My point was that this guy has suffered some pretty nasty abuse on this forum for simply bringing such news/developments to our attention and I don't think he deserved it. I think the latest developments swing the balance more in his favour than those who seem reluctant to believe that there was anything intrinsically wrong with the system. :)

Have you read what the recall is about? If not....... some of the pipes coming out of the ABS block seem to have been made off incorrectly and this is causing fluid loss. So lets not cloud the issue by bring up servo brakes/ residual braking performance again eh?

Agree 100%

No, your quite right, there's more than enough problems with those items, so let not bring up other things as well.

Agree 100% like Steptoe says.......................:thumb

...this is regarding the possible brake fault, not the handguards.

The actual recall of 37.000 GS, ST and R is about the braking lines:

Note: KTM LC8 Adventure N is delivered with flexible braking lines (it's the BOSCH ABS8M System as used in the BMW R1200S, which is equipped with the cheaper massive braking lines...)

The cause of the cracks of the old braking lines are the vibrations of the engine. This is clearly an engineering construction fault. The solution for BMW was to redesign the braking lines with several curves to reduce the oscillations.

The next recall is about the handguards. At this time BMW blocked any order of the old handguards and any part that is related with these old handguards. There are rumours at several dealers (in Germany) that the recall should take place in the end of April (but nobody knows for sure, and nobody knows about the solution.

Fact is: The new handguards on 2008 models are totally different and cannot cause any of the known problems whicht the flawed ones did. This is a picture of the 2008 handguards:

At this time it doesn't seem that it is possible that the new 2008 handguards do fit on the old bikes. However, there will be a solution. Possibly at the end of the month. Any information from the German safety authorieties in this issue is blocked, too.

BTW: The reason BMW dropped the power assisted brakes was that they were a flawed engineering design. The solution of the weaknesses were the new Integral-Brakes from Continental Teves. The actual recall of the braking lines does not mean Continental is responsible but BMW for fitting flawed braking lines on the pressure modulator (again: KTM uses flexible lines, which are more expensive).

Got my recall letter today, phoned dealer, no chance of a fix yet as the parts are on 'back order'.........can anyone out there source 37,000 sets of brake pipes?

............

What is the problem with the handguards - is it because they can rotate and touch the levers? or is it something else? I have never had a problem with my 2005 1200GS handguards.
