R1200GS values

Hi, can anyone give me an idea of the value of my GS? It's a 2008 model in namibia orange with 13000 miles on the clock. It's got ABS, ASC, computer, tyre pressure sensors, chrome pipes and motech engine bars. Full BMW service history. I was thinking of advertising it on bike trader and just wanted an idea of what to list it for.

I adore this bike but just fancy a change and have been tempted by either a blackbird or ZZR1400. Also, has anyone had any experience of going from a GS to one of these? If so, any regrets?

There are generally three prices, trade, retail and private.

Trade is the price given to you by a dealer against a new bike and it will probably frighten the crap out of you

Retail is the price charged by the dealer for a bike which is fully serviced, warrantied, prepped, valeted and ready to go.

Private is somewhere in the middle but probably closer to retail for an individual who is selling a very nice bike but of course it doesn't have the warranty and back up etc offered by a dealer.

Have a scan on the net for dealer prices and private prices to get an idea. Check bike trader and the dealer sites and you should end up with a price you feel comfortable with to sell privately.

Just a thought, a non BuMW dealer will offer you peanuts for your bike as they don't really want to retail it on so they will just sell it to a trader. Have you thought about a K1300S as the BuMW dealer will probably do a pretty good deal especially as he may have customers lined up for your GS?

Look a Biketrader/MCN. You won't do any better than that for a guide. You'll want to strip any bling off and sell that on here / eBay, then sell private. Jap dealers hate BMWs, just as BMW hate jap bikes, neither want them in their showrooms.

I went from a GS back to a fast jap in-line 4. It didn't last very long and I'm happily back on a GS.

Trade in prices are very high at BMW dealers at the moment (comparatively speaking) due to so many bikes going across to Europe last year. Shortage of used stock.

Not really a shortage of stock. The £/€ exchange rate being where it is, UK bikes are relatively cheap, it's only normal that continental buyers come to the UK for bargains.

Example : new full specced R12GSA (incl. 3 packages) (prices from BMW websites) :
UK price : 13935£
Belgium price : 18450€ = ~16034 £ (today)
BMW has not yet been able to raise prices as much as the £ has fallen. Smart continental buyers cross the channel. Even with change of headlamp and dash, there's a profit.

The same is true for second hand bikes; traders come to the UK, take care of the paperwork, and sell them on to continental buyers.

The high value of the £ was a part of Rovers' downfall : the cars were too expensive to sell abroad.
The low £ is benefical to all companies that export from UK. There's a downside of course : UK buyers looking for a secondhand bike may have a hard time finding one...

totally irrelevant comment but there once was a time when we went to Europe for cheap deals and our petrol was expensive. Now looking at 1.4EUR/ltr in Germany the other week makes you think we're quite lucky.

My two pennys worth, went from 1200gsa via a Tiger to an FJR, it was fast fairly comfortable and good on fuel BUT just a little dull. So now on an 1150gs and picking up 1200gsa tomorrow. These bloody things just get under your skin!!

I guess the sensible thing would be to sell private but failing that a p/ex with a BMW dealer would see me get a better deal than going to a 'Big 4' dealer.

The K1300S/K1200S sounds like it's definitely worthy of consideration. I sat on a K12 a while ago at Williams and thought it had an extremely comfortable riding position. I've also heard the handling is quite outstanding on the road.

I'm basically looking for the best compromise of performance, handling, comfort and everyday practicality as I now use the bike for commuting as well as leisure. I used to commute via car but got totally fed up with sitting in traffic!

I feel a K1300S test ride coming on!

That does mean some bargains though. My GS had been traded in at a Triumph / Yamaha dealer and he just wanted it out of the showroom. Price tag was £1,500 less than a BM dealer, with a 3 month warranty. OK, so the warranty was not as good, but the FPC failed and was replaced at the end of the test ride and the gearbox oil seal towards the end of the warranty, with only a battery to replace in the 2 years since. These franchised dealers do have a reputation to maintain and they didn't quibble on the warranty work, even though non-BM dealers.

Hmmmm. I'ts awesome. I have one and when the weather improves I will get it out ... soon please.

However I'm out on my GS whenever I have the chance. It's fast enough, I can see over the top of the cars, I don't have to try too hard and I'm going 20mph slower, which saves all sorts of things.

The Z really is fabulous, I'm lucky enough to have both. Bought it for a midlife crisis just for the year and I still have it 2 years later.
Oh dear, it's fab, get one then come back to something sensible when you have had enough!

I wish it was true!!!! I just got a trade quotation for my 2006 GS from a BMW dealer to buy a new GSA and it was very much less than peanuts!!!

Spot on! £4,300! - 30k miles, non-ABS, with Vario Panniers plus several accessories. Whatever you do it's a bloodbath, will probably keep it or sell it privately. Or just keep it and do some more travelling with it!

It was about what I expected on trade in price. If it had the book mileage of 19000 then the trade in would have been £5250.

I wasn't bothered to be honest Johnny as I would be more than happy to punt the bike out privately as I know I can do a lot better.

The dealer did say that he wouldn't put my bike on the forecourt as they prefer the newer stuff with lower miles. It seems too many buyers out there coming to main dealers don't want the high mileage stuff.
