Now this is the kind of GS I really like to see.....:thumb

One that's done what it says on the tin.......Must be a good one to have done the mileage and being an instructors bike and needed everyday for work should have a good service history aswell.

My local dealer had a high mileage 1200RT and they wanted to sell it to trade as soon as possible whereas I thought that that bike should have been the first you'd see in the showroom.........A bike that's done what it's supposed to......!

I'd love to have put that kind of mileage on the 'same' GS.:bow

Mallorca BMW Dealer

I just put my gs up for sale last week after 6 years and 83.000km with no major problems. I had a guy very interested until he called up the local BMW dealer here in Palma. They told him that a bike that age more or less is scrap and would give loads of trouble. Turns out i bought the bike from the same dealer and i remember they told me that these engines were good for 150.000 km or more before any major work. I plan to go and see the ass hold and see will he tell me the same face to face. Does anyone out there have an e-mail address for the BMW complaints in Germany?????

Tell him to hurry up and sell it, gonna be snowing here soon and you wouldnt like to be riding round the volcanos in the snow now would you !!! :augie

Extended warranty is good for 8years or 80k miles here in UK

Don't know if it is different for you but thought it worth a mention.

Mine has done 52000, and just had a new shaft drive, clutch, and shims in the gear box under warranty I took out a few yrs back. With out that warranty it would have been big bucks! I think I will now keep it for as many yrs I can get wear and tear out of it, it does everything i want.

Hi,

What warranty did you have, as i have the bmw one and am faced with the same issue, however my dealer has said its wear and tear and not covered.
If BMW think the bike will be ok until 80k miles, then that's what they should hold to. (contenscious issue maybe - but unlike a clutch, can you abuse a shaft drive?)
My bike has had extended warranty since the standard one ranout.
its done 76k and is a 04 plate ....

What's the issue with it? Your FD and gearbox should be warranty but your clutch definately won't be as they just wear out.

there is a whole seperate thread worth for that answer, but they are saying its worn out and causing clutch slip due to 2 bearings at the engine end of the shaft drive being worn. they are also saying my clutch slip is todo with the hand guard even though the slipping is intermittent. They seem more confused than me.
Its the 4th time they had tried to fix it, and inspected the shaft drive last time it went in ( 2k miles ago) they never said anything about it then.

The whole saga started when i had the clutch oil seal leak. when they split the bike, they realised that the clutch was almost worn out, so offered to fit a new one for 500 quid. (my bike had done 68k) so i thought ok do it.

From that moment onwards (and 4 months later) i have had clutch judder, 2 new clutches and my bike has been in and out the dealership about 5 times.
Each time i take it in, they try and sell me something else.
For example, when it was dropped off to be test ridden for the clutch judder (when pulling away) they claimed my battery was flat, and unless i paid 146 quid for a new battery, they were unwilling to test ride it. So i got the bike back, as i new the clutch judder was going to get worse. It did, and it went in again which was attempt no 2.
The problem has apparantly now spread out to the shaft drive, wehereby they initially tried to sell my replacement gators for 100 quid (the black rubber things you can see) and now the latest as i speak on the phone, they want me to buy a new shaft drive off them.

I have just returned off holiday wherebe i had clutch slip for the last 1000k miles back and am deeply dissatisfied with the whole experience.
That's a summary, but i'm sure you get the idea that i am angry and also not a technical guru of bmw's !!

Mate, I would go to another dealer if I were you as it seems they are incapable of fixing it.

yes, exactly. At present, i have said if they do not fix it without incurring me any additional cost, then i will remain a customer. If not, then they will not see me again.
Given i have had brilliant (high cost) service from them for 7 years, it looks like this relationship might end. ....

1200GSA warranty, G'rrr.

Hi Chaps, reading these stories & after 30 plus years biking mainly Yamaha and only 1 breakdown I purchased an 1150 GS, not to bad so progressed to a 1200 GSA. Whoops a few problems, so silly me bought from a dealer a newer GSA, one previous owner. Told when I bought it top of the range all singing dancin, loads of extras etc, when I wanna sell it not interested high mileage etc. Thought they were supposed to be used. After a year and well lots n lots of expense, breakdowns excuses. not quite worn warped or broken enough to be repaired under warranty, loads out of pocket expense, new front discs, new rear suspension, new battery, wiring problems, to mention a few, wont keep on just thought I would let you know how to stop all these problem's. Buy a Yamaha I have.......Heres to another 30 plus years of ridin, well I hope.:rob Thats if I dont breakdown meself :thumb

But in all fairness the GS tends to have issues at any mileage, so as to if to buy a high mileage example or not perhaps it makes little odds, my clutch is playing up at 14k...

My discs are knackered, yet the pads are barely half worn (and not covered by the extended warranty, although I cannot see it as fair wear and tear if the discs are buggered before the pads are worn!)

Both fork seals have blown

On the other hand Sgt Bilco's has managed to get to nearly 70k with no such problems, not sure if the good GS's outnumber the bad ones, but 25 years of Jap bike ownership has taught me they rarely make a bad bike, so I am personally well on the way to change again and most likely to Yamaha ownership.
