r1200gsa using the power socket

Hi there, I have a new GS and was told that I cannot simply plug anything into the power, such as the TomTom Rider from my old F650, without the "computer being tweaked", apparently it is configured for just the right amount of power draw and any additional devices will simply not work, or cause problems. Is this true ? I'd like to fit the TomTom and eventualyl would like to try an Autocom too.

Thats about right, get the extra outlet from nippy's site and wire it from the battery with a fuse in line. that way you can plug your charger into it when its in the garage. You DO have a charger don't you? Never had a battery ploblem myself ( now thats the kiss of death that is ) but lots have.

Mike, not really correct. You can plug almost any power using device into the power socket as long as it does not oveload the specified ampage and someone here will tell us what that is... but it is quite a lot. the socket is not fuse protected, but the canbus switches it off if something is wrong and furthermore switches it off 15 secs after switching the ignition off, which is very useful. There is absolutely no need to tweak any computer when powering a device from these sockets. You do need to reprogramme the canbus when significantly altering the current useage of any other device already on the canbus.

I understand that the canbus is rated at 5.0 amps..........and this is when mine turns off.

Does anyone know if it is possible to increase this a bit more? I would like 6.0 amps.

Of course I know that I can wire direct to the battery but I would rather not, besides I like the idea of the canbus.

Hi - I bought a new R1200GSA September 1st from the helpfull people at CW in Dorchester. I had my Touratech mounting and Tom TOm rider swopped over from my KTM by CW and they have hard wired it into the normal electrics so it runs through the Cambus and keeps everyting protected.......therfore if you go straight into the power socket it wont affect the bike at all.

CW also fitted an aux socket on my '06 GSA, but I believe the supply is from the standard fit socket (it powers-down on start up), and I've run a Garmin 2820 from it almost from day-1 without problems. What are you powering to be of concern?
