My plan for this coming winter was to get a bit of weather protection for the 1200R (already have an ugly Givi screen which I use on tour) and decided to fit Memphis Shades lowers - really meant for cruisers. Pic shows them loosely fitted last night but I didn't get a chance to try them out until this morning (weather typically foul
). After a couple of short test runs I eventually dropped them down the forks by about 2 inches. They don't foul the tank, even at full(ish) lock on slow bumpy turns.
The results were actually better than expected - my leathers were dry from just below the knee upwards and I sat in a nice pocket of relative calmness, even whilst making progress on the motorway. I'd say that they raise the comfortable cruising speed by at least 15mph. No noticeable effect on engine cooling either, even after 45 mins of quick riding. Too early to say if they will help during cold weather but I suspect they will. It doesn't turn the bike into an RT, it just increases the comfort for a low outlay, albeit they aren't pretty....
I don't really like adding (probably unnecessary) protection to naked bikes as it spoils the looks but I'll see how I get on once the weather turns consistently nasty and I'll just take them off during warmer weather (although they could be useful during those surprise continental downpours).
Had to purchase them online from the US and cost just under £80 delivered (5 days). Harley dealers probably stock them though.
