I want to recode the lock for the large topbox on my R1200RT.
I believe in the workshop manual (that covers the 1200GS, RS and RT) that there is a tool that can be fashioned to remove the lock of the side cases, does anyone know if the same tool could be used to release the lock on a topbox and if so where is the latch located on the topbox lock.

Does anyone with the manual have is a picture of the topbox lock in there versions of the manual ( I have a picture of the sidecase lock) as I believe the sidecase lock mechanism is different.

In theory you can remove the lock barrel by removing the screw in bung (quarter turn) then fish around inside with a probe of some kind that will push in pawl that keeps the lock barrels in place.

I have only read of one guy who has done this, but he didn’t say exactly how or where he pressed with his probe  Others have dismantled the top box to remove the lock barrel, but said it’s quite a job because of the complexity of the mechanism. :(

All the top boxes and panniers have the same bung, so there must be a relatively easy way to do it. If I ever work it out I write up a web page…

P.S. I have the BMW DVD manual, its usless :(
