R1250GS what engine bars to buy ?

There are so many to choose from, can't afford BMW so what others are worth looking at ?. I think I want plane steel ones .:nenau
 
Looks good but doesn’t look like it would save the lower part of the heads if I dropped it.
 
Yeah. They look like they may do the job. Mind you, I do like the look of the wunderlich ones.
 
The problem with the wunderlich ones is the same as the stock ones, there is nothing stopping the end of the crash bar hitting against the cover if the bike falls over, which tends to happen more often than crashing it’s ltself.

Not sure I understand what you are getting at? I have the Wunderlich bars, primarily for protection against static drops, and don't see how the crash bar would deflect enough to hit the head cover in a simple topple over. In a high speed drop all bets are off anyway, regardless of which bars you choose.

Mine went over with full luggage and because there is no rear support the bars got very close to the head, no damage apart form the bar itself, where as the altrider bars are much stronger. I think sliding down the road would have less direct force than a straight fall over.

OK, I see what you mean, but mine have an upper support at the front and a lower strut at front and rear so hopefully will be fairly resistant to bending enough to impact the head. An upper support at the rear would make them stronger, but would also be difficult to keep out of the way of the rider's legs, and would make the bars much uglier, so I'm happy with the compromise.
 
I have a used set of SW Motch bars which have done a few thou on the bike and survived one drop to the right at a standstill.
Infilled in the minor marks and resprayed them grey.

You can have em for £80 + delivery if you want to try them.
 
For ultimate protection it would be machineart head covers with altrider crash bars. If you did happen to fall on a rock that went between the bars the machineart covers would protect the centre of the cover.

No, it hasn't fallen over, but I've only had it since March 1st. However, I also put similar bars on the previous GS which I had for two years and covered 11,500 miles on. That never fell over either, so to me putting bars on is like an insurance policy which I hope I will never need.

In weighing up the balance between no protection and the ultimate four point bars plus head covers, versus the likelihood of needing it, I went for the middle ground of reasonable but visually unintrusive protection. I'm happy with my decision, but everyone has to make their own decision on this.

Sadly that's what my Wunderlich bars did. Very low speed tumble on an icy T-junction, not a mark elsewhere on the bike (LeverGuard partially to thank) but enough to make the left crash bar deflect in and chip the cylinder head.
