What engine bars for a R1200 GS 2006 model?

Engine bars 06 GS

I picked the Hepco Becker ones, after long deliberations. Also considered: BMW & Touratech. My Hepco's look great (black), were a breeze to install and were very well priced (here in the US). We put them to the test yesterday, and they came through with flying colors. Ironically I had stopped to help my less experienced riding buddy to turn his bike around on this narrow, sandy, sloped fire break road. I put the stand down but did not put the bike in gear. Mistake. So, as soon as I took my hand and foot of the brake, the beast of course decided to roll downhill, flippin up the stand. I jumped clear and gently laid it down. While I am a big bloke, I have ofnd out I cant keep the big beast up once it wants to go down. Minor scratch on the Hepco, and the left side mirror housing.

SW Motecs are good value and are even better now that they've been re-designed and done away with the bar which ran under the bash plate.

I have Touratech 'bars on my GS. The quality, fit and finish is first class. They are so easy to put on, but you do need to either loosen them or take them off completely for some aspects of servicing. However, as I've said, they are a doddle for doing so. Downsides, dealing with TTUK, price and they can touch down on both sides during 'spirited' riding.

I would also advise you fit an R&G crash bung for the drive shaft pivot.

I was in the same position a few months ago and chose the Hepco Becker bars mainly because of what was said on this site and also because I preferred the way they fitted to the bike. The SW Motech had a strap bar below the engine guard which meant removal of the bar when changing oil etc.

The HB bars arrived, excellent quality of finish, easy to fit BUT, the RHS one stuck out about an inch further than the LHS. In fact the LHS did not protrude much passed the head and I doubted whether it would offer the protection??

Sent photos to the supplier, who agreed and returned the bars. It would appear that 'they are all like that????

I then discovered on the Adventure site that SW Motech had changed their design, so ordered a set of those. Finish is good but maybe not as good as HB. They will do the job and the oil filter can be changed without removing the bars.

You can have a look at them if you wish as we aint that far apart.

Just as the title says, what are the best ones?

What about protection?

My mate (Stemo) has the BMW bars on his 1200GS & has tested them. He went down the road on it & his ally head cover was still scratched to feck.
Why do BMW make engine protectors that don't protect the engine? They're OK if you just drop the bike but if you're moving fwd at the time they're useless.

For protection compare them to something like....

SW Motech (yellow bike)

Although he also had the black plastic protectors on they just ripped this off & here's the damage...woulda been worse without the plastic protector taking some of the initial impact.

Has anyone got a set of these?

Upper and lower bars from Motorworks?

Here is a photo of Motorworks H&B upper and lower bars.

Plenty more photos from different angles if you need them.

Can't remember what I paid for them. Fitting of engine bars was pretty straight forward but the top bars were hard to fit single handed. Finish looks good but despite generous applications of WD40 I have noticed some paint flaking off at mounts. Touched them up with hammerite along with the bracket where the top bars join the engine bars. Rocker covers are easily removed with the engine bars in place. I also managed to remove the front engine cover with the bars in place, though was a tight fit. I can't however get the side fairings cover off with the top bars in place. The top bars also have pre drilled holes for fitting auxiliary lights.
