R12GS '04 Engine Electronics warning...

[(RIP) Bin Ridin]

Hi,

Out on bike last Friday and took a lash to get ahead of the pack, then stopped and got a few photos of the chaps coming around a bend.
When I restarted the bike, the amber triangle lit up and the picture corresponding to Engine Electronics came on the screen. Off /wait /on a few times did not reset it.

Rode off to catch up and still had light / picture showing. Stopped again after maybe 10 minutes, off / wait / on and light and picture did not re-appear. No sign of any problems since.

Manual says go to dealer "defensively" -I think that means be ready to shell out.

Anyone come across this matter before and what did it lead to? Doom? Forget about it?

Only thing I can think of is something from stopping relatively suddenly, but Iremember idling along the hard shoulder for a bit to pick my spot, so it was not a crash stop.

This happened to me a couple of years ago when the bike was fairly new. I was touring Ireland and the amber engine management warning light came on. Switching on/off wouldn't shift it and it left a shadow of doubt about the bike for most of the trip. Then it its own time, the warning light disappeared.

When I got back, the BMW mechanic said that he couldn't find anything wrong or any electronic record of the fault indication.

I think the moral to this story is get the bike to your dealer when you can, but don't let it spoil your riding.

Take "defensively" to mean to be on the safe side.

My 99 Harley had a form of fault indication. Once it had regestered a fault it would display it, after a while-days-the warning would vanish. Apparently, after a number of self tests have been carried out with no fault being identified the warning re-sets itself and there is no evidence to see. A Harley a tech told me it could have been just a bit of dirt on one of the sensors.

Sounds like one of the engine sensors is playing up e.g. lambda, anti-knock, cam position (although I don't think it'd start if it were this). I would imagine that your engine management has gone to a safe mode, which is probably why the manual says ride defensively??

I had this happen once and surprisingly it was a blown bulb in either the brake or indicator (can't remember which) that caused it. Mentioned to the dealer that it was odd that it was the engine warning indicator and not the blown bulb indicator but he said it did happen. (Mine is an '04).

Happened to me once too - just as I was setting off for the ferry to France

I went straight to the delers and they investigated straight away, it turned out to be the crank senser and cam senser mis-reading against eachother. so, the system was reset and it's never happended since.

The dealer did make the point that, whilst you should see a dealer if the fault light persisits, 'amber' warnings are not indicitive of anything high risk as far as your engine is concerned.

My EWS warning once showed when I rode past a mobile phone transmitter that was being tested (well there were engineers working on it). It has not happened since. The transmitter was the only reason I could think of for the fault
