The other disappointing thing (from an engineering point of view) about the 1300 vario luggage is that when the side cases are hooked over the mounts the back of the case is resting on a fairly rough casting ridge on the mount. This makes no sense to me.

If you use the £125 clothing voucher you can still swap for the new version panniers next year when they are available.
What was. The topbox fix they did ?
I think the problem was you could remove the key from the topbox when putting on the rack when it was not correctly seated and then potentially it could fall off! Now apparently if not on correctly you cannot remove the key. This fix I was told it needed at least 6 months ago, but finally they have the solution.
And did they say what the solution is ?
They did not tell me how it was fixed, just that it is fixed and now safe to use. I did ask if I wanted to return it for a refund since I was returning the panniers would bmw refund for the topbox and after talking to bmw they would refund for the topbox, should I decide to return it. Having thought about it I decided to keep the topbox.
BMW customer service at its best, returned the panniers to the dealer on Tuesday 1st October and two weeks later still waiting for bmw to refund the £900 ??? They really take the piss, returned at the request of bmw and they can’t refund in a timely fashion.
From a visit to Williams Motarrad I was told there will be newer BMW varios out in the new year, similar in looks so to match the existing top box which should

I have pondered a 1300GS to replace my 1250GS, but for now it's not happening
I did do some research into what panniers I could get and liked the SW motech DUSC cases and how they made the carrier removable
The Shad expandable panniers were also looking quite good. Had Shad panniers before and quality was excellent
But all these are extra expense nearer to a £1000 than £500
I already have the BMW vario cases and inner bags, so this looks like it could be acheaper alternative if you were swapping bikes and already had the 1200 / 1250 varios

Wunderlich now do a kit to fit old varios panniers to the 1300 ie the original vario system from the 1200/1250 . Top box and panniers . Available from Nippy Normans £280 for both fittings
