R1300GS owners, don't overload your topbox

I've been looking at the 1300 with half the idea to make the leap. But this story has been noted!
I am eyeing the adventure. Did anyone know how this part of the bike is done differently? Cannot believe it's plastic

As for weight in the topbox. Never overloaded this simply because it ruins the handling of a great bike (all bikes!). 40kg. Botus. C'mon

The vario top box mount on the GS is all cast aluminum. It will not break. Nobody knows what the bike in the original post was using but it's unlikely not the stock part
 
I weaned myself off, using , a topbox. I found it destabilised the bike at speed (aerodynamics) and impacted on cornering ( all manageable ).

The upside of metal panniers is that they protect the bike from damage when it hits the ground, which is never planned but happens!

Hi Slippery, if you order the bike without a topbox mount, the rear rack is plastic and clearly not designed to carry a top box. you could bolt anything you want to it but itll likely break!

The three options are:

1. buy the bike with the topbox mount and use the vario case.
2. buy the bike with the topbox mount and use an adaptor plate to fit your choice of topbox (i have currently a Givi adaptor for a Givi topbox which has been used at voulme capacity and a small bags of tools , pump etc on top)
3. but the bike with topbox mount / plastic handrail / plastic rack then remove and fit the topbox mounting kits made by shad / Givi etc and use your topbox of choice (i used the Givi rails and plate on my first 13)

The top box is a terrible place to store weight - not just for the reasons in the above tale, but because it's so far away from the bike's centre of gravity. I bet that thing had a weave like Trump's hair at speed on the road...

I expect BMW will point him to the advice on load limits - which are very low for top boxes, in my experience. If he wants to keep all his kit in one place, a good tank bag with tank panniers is the best option...

He was going to BMW Motorrad days on a Hyabusa
He was camping, to save coin
He had a Givi plastic topbox on it and a roll bag with tent etc
After visiting Touratech in Black Forest, we were rejoining the main road from a minor road and for some reason he failed to make the bend on the slip road & I saw him in my mirrors, shoot across the main road and over a drainage ditch and up the grass bank
Bike was largely undamaged as it was a soft landing
However the top box was ripped off and I went to pick it up
I couldn’t hardly lift it, must have weighed 30-40kg
It was full of tins of baked beanz and soup from uk ….FFS

I use the vario pretty much all the time, just so convenient. Seems to be stable over 200kmh. I guess I'm just used to the weight going into corners
