A friend of mine has a 1984 R65 which needs an ignition switch. He's asked suppliers and looked on eBay but it seems everything is about £70 or so.

Anyone got one they'd be prepared to part with cheaper than that? Or is that a good price?

The only photo I have of the bike in question. Can anyone identify the exact model?

Ask him to look at his left switchgear is there a sidelamp / dip lamp on off switch?

Like this right side of the one in this pic?

I may have one if his switchgear is like this ?

Thanks all, just caught up with this thread again. I'll contact the owner tomorrow and see what I can find to narrow the search down.

I just had to replace the ignition switch on my R80. Found a second hand one with key on ebay for £25, wired it up using a diagram I found online and now working fine.

Where in Fife are you? Im currently doing up my R80 in East Wemyss at the weekends. Needs a fair bit of work done to get back up to a good standard so will likely be tinkering a while.

I'm sure if he found one that cheaply he'd have it!

I'm in Tayport. The bike in question, however, is just south of Salisbury... :D

I would suggest paying you a visit, but my van needs some front suspension work this weekend which I suspect will take me quite a while.

What model of R80 are you working on?

It now appears that the switch is not in fact missing. :blast However, the previous owner had lost the keys, so it might as well be missing.

It also looks like he has two bikes with missing keys, the other is an R80 of a similar age.

In case I'm wrong, though; is it possible to get replacement keys for these switches, or to re-barrel them?

I've been promised photos of the actual switch later today*, which I'll put on here, as it may help...

* This probably means I'll have to remind him to do that in a week's time...

I just got a replacement key for mine. Phone Allan Jeffries BMW in Shipley, speak to a guy called Michael Lyon. The number is 01274 535484.

You will need the chassis number of the bike(s) as well as emailing him a scan of the V5 ownership documents. He can only post the keys out to the address on the V5.

A single key is £9 odds, and a folding key about double that.

PM me if you want Michael's direct email address.

Now that's useful to know. I'll tell Chris but there's a good chance that the V5s could be lost. Thanks, if he has the V5s then I'll drop you a PM. :beerjug:
