I'm in the process of building an R65 Engine, I was given a box of bits containing the remnants of 2 engines but both fully stripped down and I am trying to build one up using the best of parts from each one.

I have just installed the rocker arms, but cannot set the valve clearance as one remains open even with the adjuster fully backed off. On further examination I have noticed that each rocker arm is stamped with a different number, two have 333 on them and two have 367, so I'm guessing there is maybe one for exhaust and one for intake, if so which is which? or should they all be the same number, any advice greatly appreciated.

There are 2 rocker arms. One does the left inlet & right exhaust, the other does the right inlet & left exhaust.
If the adjustment is that far out, have you checked all the lifters were the same height? have you used one of the short pushrods in long barrels?? There are many differences between the small R45/65 engine & the R80/100's & perhaps parts have got mixed up?

Thanks for the reply, first thing I will try now you you have confirmed the rockers are different, is to change their position, do you know which is which 333-367?

You can't mix them up! if you did, you'd have the adjuster for the pushrod at the top - & there's no pushrods there! :blast
Imagine looking at your right hand head, you have the pushrods in the lower middle. At your left hand you have the inlet rocker, at your right hand you have the exhaust rocker. These rockers are mirror images of each other. Imagine you're now at the left cylinder, the layout is identical except that at your left hand is now an exhaust & the inlet is in your right hand. Hence the right inlet & left exhaust rockers are the same & won't fit in the other positions.

Must be a different pushrod then, i'll take them out and measure them.

Have you got the washers fitted under the rocker shaft supports?
I have a set of cam followers spare if you happen to need some,
And a really nice set of 8k miles barrels and pistons:thumb
Edit, if you need any measurements for anything I have an engine in bits at the moment, feel free to ring me

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the offer, I'll do a bit more investigation first, I was given the boxes of bits from a friend of my sons who's father was killed in a bike accident, there were two engines but totally stripped, I have built the block up replaced the rings and a burnt out valve, but just hit the rocker problem today when trying to set the clearances, i'll double check for the washers. My thoughts were I have a mismatch of parts from different motors. The frame has a log book for a R65 so I was assuming thats what both engines were from, but could well be different parts from other marks in there.
