R68

In 2009, Bonhams sold a collection that included an R68 ISDT owned by Georg Meier, it was listed at £17 to 20K but what it sold for I don't know.

8700- quid and its only an 800.

There was a similarly advertised R69 on Oz Ebay recently , with a $1- starting price, and after 37 bids it hadnt passed $200-. Some neds having a bit fun I think, as it was down to 2 cent increases at the end.

It jumped from there to $14,500- in two probably bogus bids, but it was still below the reserve and didnt sell= most Ozzies are riders, not collectors, and in that price range you would want a good close look at the bike anyway.

The bike I've been offered is in the UK.

All the numbers match, it was last used in 1975, then laid-up and has been in heated storage since 1982 when acquired by the current owner.

It only has 4,168 miles on it.

I'm waiting for photos but am assured that it's complete.

As I say, I've been offered the bike but I don't know what a realistic value is, nor does the owner who has seen the US ebay link (but Merkin prices are no realistic guide given their enthusiasm for anything more than 25 years old).

The owner is a genuine bloke, if I can't afford the bike (which I seriously suspect), I'd like to be able to point him towards somewhere that he'll get what it's worth.

IMHO..
The R68 suffered bacause of the R69, R69s..with the Earles forks...
A very capable bike in itself, the R68 just didn't sell in great numbers..
Whereas a R69 of which they made loads of is woth a lot more in Concours condition.
As long as the R68 is totally complete I'd be looking at paying twixt £5k - £12k depending on condition....................

R68 is one of the more collectable older BMW's. An excellent bike, knocks the spots off an R69. Hence the silly money they fetch.

My friend graham crate has an absolute as new R68 = ££££££, along with his collection of R69 and steib sidecars and a 1930's bmw (can't remember the model) which he uses as an everyday bike, often see it parked up outside the cafe in merton. :D .

I once owned a 1951 R67 i bought from a house clearance auction , sold it to a bloke in holland.
