There’s been a lot of debate over the years.. in my humble opinion, I think it is.. I recently sold my UK supplied pd in the background pic to the lucky explorer Robert Maxwell.. he absolutely loves it.. and so he should a great example i acquired from Gary Burton and i then had a top and overhaul and tidy up done..
but I’ve kept my pristine European example.. it is being ridden but lightly with 4 other g/s no need to abuse this one.. it was in the lounge for awhile now in the garage alongside the others.. I wanted one in the 80s but with family and mortgage it was out the question at the time…less than 300 miles since total restoration ...imho the best example out there full stop.

I’m very jealous…..

You have too many g/s’…… and I haven’t got one in my garage, and think one would be good to keep my R80GS basic company.

Your bikes look great…….lucky sod!

Health to continue to ride them all.

Thanks Bubb i’m trying to restore an airhead every winter managed for the last 6 years .I’ve just finished one ready for spring rides and purchased the next one ready for this coming winter .. this is a rough old example but I get great pleasure in working on them i’m bringing them back into perfect condition..

No this was one of three bikes that Theo Terwell restored he’s extremely well regarded in Europe.. the other two went through Bonham auctions in 2022 fetching 46,000 and 36,800 euros crazy money ..

Dread to think what one of the original 24 would sell for.

You never know, bmw r80 g/s 001 production no .. I missed out a few years ago on.. from what I remember it made just over £6000 at auction balmer lawn bmw Motorcycle dealer in the New Forest has it … untouched still in its old clothes.. right place right time comes to mind..

Sorry, no, not the best looking bike ever, we all like different machines but aesthetically it’s not that pleasing to the eye, tank over bulbous, big sticky out cylinders, orange seat ffs, how can this even compare to the likes of a Z1, Ducati MHR, Brough superior, Vincent ,916 Ducati ..need I go on. You like it and that’s what counts, by the way which amateur wired your back light, incorrectly routed.
I think they do look lovely but no way the best looking IMHO..
Enjoy, Steve.

Wow, tell me what you really think Steve… I was comparing it to adventure style bikes.. I think you got out of bed the wrong side mate this morning..you have one and dont you have a private gs plate on your car …so you must like them somewhat .. I think it must be you the Muppet mr Rutherford that’s wired correctly on every other paris Dakar check in their brochure. I’ve got the original brochures better ask Gary burton he’ll put you right.. it’s not nice having negative comments, especially when they’re unfounded

This was Gary burtons old pd I had …as can be seen wiring same Steve.. try and think happy thoughts instead of jibing ….

The g/s is a great bike….very purposeful looking, and a great ride.

Not the “best looking” imho, as looks are subjective….

Best looking: 1969 triumph Bonneville in Olympic flame colour.
Ducati 916
MV Augusta F4
Ducati 750SS
Vincent V twin black shadow
Moto Morini 3 1/2
Rickman Metisse

…..and a few others I think look lovely, even if I don’t know what they ride like.( I do know how the triumph and Metisse ride, and the Morini, but not the others….yet)

I do think the g/s is great, as is the gs ( love my R80GS Basic)

Absolutely, it was said tongue and cheek… i’ve had several of the Ducati,s and absolutely the 916 is wall art along with the black shadow and Rick Metisse all so subjective… if we all love the same it would be a boring world... basic is quite a rare Bike these days.. there was one for sale in Northern Ireland. I was sorely tempted on but I’ve stuck with the mono…

Topcat

Get a Basic to go with your g/s’s….. it’s a great bike, and last of the air cooled GS bikes ( only 3000 made, so a bit of a rarity)
I love my basic …it’s a bit scruffy, but a great ride, and often gets favourable comments.
I don’t want it looking pristine, as then I wouldn’t ride it as much as I’d be scared of any marks/scars….

I never rode a 916, but always thought they looked great from day one. ….maybe one day…..
Same with a Vincent v twin….. not ridden one, but would like to.
