R80 G/S Rescue

So, following the Death of a Mate,you are clearing out a stack of Vintage 2-Stroke Jawa Bikes and Spares that he has left to you when you find this;

Late 1980 R80 G/S with 22,000 Km on the Clock and not used for 10-12 Years. Well,a bit of negotiation with the Wife/Widow and the Bike goes,along with the Jawa stuff.

This happened a few Weeks back to my Mate Bob,in Newcastle NSW. He got the Bike back to his place (where the Pic was taken) and surveyed his aquisition. Being Dry-Stored in the Oz climate,it hasn't fared too badly. Bob cleaned out the Carbs and flushed the Tank. Fresh Fuel and a borrowed Battery and the Bike chugged to life on the 2nd Spin. A gentle spin up and down the Road showed that the Bike was Runner. A thorough wash showed that there was little to do to get the Bike back on the Road but Bob has decided to do a Tidy-Up before putting the Bike to Service.
The Tank and Panels have gone for Painting as has the Frame. The seat is being re-covered in Black. The Alloy has come up pretty well as have the Wheels. Because it is going to be used,Bob just wants it looking decent not Concours.
I got a Top-End Gasket Set,Tank Badges,Front Brake Light Switch and a Pair of Fork Gaiters sent over by Motorworks and sent an e-bay Haynes Manual over.
The Top End strip is being done so that new Pushrod Tube rubbers can be fitted. With such a low mileage figure on the Engine,there is nothing needs doing with it barring Oil and Filter change.

Yes,like the 1952 ES2 Norton and the 1959 350 Jawa Twin was not enough !! The G/S will get a fair bit of use. Bob will now sell on a Yamaha 900 Diversion that he's finding a bit heavy for him and Wife Janet.
I've told him that he has become an Aussie Tosser and he just called me a Pommie B"st"rd .

A dime a dozen these bikes. Far over rated and probably the most boring bike to drive that I have ever owned.

"Blimey,i've nearly dismantled it !!"

Well on the way to complete pulldown within 6 Days of arriving. It's keeping Bob occupied and out from under Janet's feet

He did say that it was strange dealing with a Bike with 2 Cylinders after Years of Speedway Jawas, Suzuki and Honda Trailies and the ES2 Norton. The Jawa Twin gets fettled by his Mate Dave "TC" Morris. Dave was the Australian Importer for the Make and has all of the Factory Tools needed.
The Trailer full of Jawa stuff mentioned in the opening post has been sifted through and it looks like there are enough bits to assemble 6 complete Bikes with a load of spares left over.
I'm guessing my next visit might see me Ring-Dinging around Newcastle !!

Bit south of Bob but just had our first rain for 7 weeks and in that time temps up to 43.5 C.

A bit of progress. Bob's been away on a Fishing Trip. Didn't catch many as the rivers and Lakes had been spoilt by recent heavy rain lifting levels and stirring up tons of silt.
So,back in the Workshop and here we are;

Bob has found that the Bike had been in an accident and the repairs were not as good as they ought to have been.So;
Wheels cleaned and checked,new Rubber,brakes stripped,cleaned and reassembled,front forks stripped,checked and reassembled.All added to repainted frame.
Due to the vagaries of the Law,Bob is having some Braided Stainless clutch pipes made up to supplied patterns. He is hoping that they may fit the Front Brake system .

More as and when .

Progress is leisurely as Bob has a circle of Mates that take turns hosting "Chat Sessions" - basically,sit round in the Garage shooting the breeze. I reckon they are like "Last of the Summer Wine" with Motorcycles. As well as TC,mentioned earlier, there is Reg Ingold. A really nice Englishman who has been living in Oz for a long time.He is a really Talented Engineer,now making Models Engines and Curios.

Looking at it again I think he's just stuck the lever back on to the splined bit

I can;t remember 100% but I think the cam is slightly offset and needs to go the right way around

A bit more done. Bob was not keen on the original N/S/R Footrest Hanger so made one up. Janet (SWMBO) is small in Height and Weight but will be using this as a way to climb onboard,hence the strengthening

The back end will be temporarily Hard-Tailed so that the Shock can be removed for a re-furb and the spring painted.

Like i said at the start, Bob wanted a useable Bike so the restoration was always going to be Function rather than Concours. Having had a good career riding Speedway in Australia as well as over here, Bob is no stranger to fastidious machine prep ( he never had an Engine go Bang ) so this Tidy up and recommission was not a taxing challenge. Only disappointment has been the Side Panels which will be replaced (once the Yam Diversion sells). The new Battery was due today and all being well,Bob will celebrate his 73rd Birthday,tomorrow, taking the Bike for a spin with the Newcastle (NSW) Classic Bike Club. Sorry that the pics were not more in-depth,but Bob was concentrating on the Job, rather than taking pics.
