To follow the theme, my 30 minute job today (to see why the indicator warning light wasn't working) turned to two hours when I rounded off the head of one of the four screws that hold the two cockpit halves together.

Main issue is me using the wrong screw driver for the job (doesn't help that the screws are hidden). Is this just me (I can see I am setting myself up for a fall :blast) or have others had this problem? The metal of the screws is quite soft and it really takes some effort to turn the screws in the first place.

So before I order replacement screws from Motorworks are there any other ideas?

Many Thanks

Billy

Hmm, mine are studs.

People seldom know that there is a difference between Phillips and Pozi-drive and that it really does make a difference. I think you've just learned that fact.

Screwdrivers are like spanners different sizes for different jobs -I learnt the hard way too (for about 15 years :() Also buy good quality screwdrivers. Can't picture the screws in question but maybe try using button head allen screws, maybe stainless and use a bit of anti sieze on reassembly.

indeed.

IME most cheap/widely available screwdrivers are pozi, but can't recall having seen a pozidrive head on a bike, they're all philips.

pozi maybe on some electrical components?

The phillips screws are supposed to "Cam out" the driver when the screw stalls to prevent damage to the head of the screw but of course most competent GSer's can force a posidriv into the slot and overcome this deliberate design principle by tearing the head of the screw to pieces :augie

in the 3 instrument binnacles I have ever come across, some of the steel screws have always been corroded into the inserts. So drilling and removing has been the only option. When the head has been drilled off, using a pair of mole grips on the remains of the screw, the corrosion was so bad it dislodged the insert in the plastic.

I bought some replacement brass plastic inserts at Rob Farmers suggestion which worked really well. They came in a pack of 10 so I have some spare if it comes to this and you need some.

Then as others suggest ... stainless screws and brass inserts should hopefully mean that you wont get the corrosion issue again

cheers

-Pete

Having had the brass inserts come loose . . . I now use stainless socket-headed bolts.

Easy to undo with Allan Keys :thumb

Bob.

Thanks, I like the idea of socket heads - replaced screws with sockets on the carbs for the same reason. The Pozzi versus Phillips issue aside I think its only a matter of time before I damage a head again with repeated use as mine are very tight (the screws push the two parts of the cowling apart as opposed to coming out).

Pete will drop you a PM re inserts.

Cheers

Where did you get these and do you have any specs about them?
I need a couple for my G/S cockpit and would like to try to track them down on this side of the planet,
cheers,

I just sent some spares to kavb as he is local.

Just type "4mm brass insert" into ebay. I did it on uk ebay and got this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRASS-INSERTS-4mm-PUSH-M4-INSERT-PLASTICS-QTY-5-/250791879643?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&hash=item3a645c63db#ht_892wt_1138

Typical though - these are cheaper than the ones I bough and the list them in 5's not 25's :blast

Thanks Pete,
now I know what they look like and what they are called.
Ebay Australia comes up with nothing like that, so I will have to look a bit wider I think. Hopefully I can find them locally, otherwise I'll try a different ebay.
Cheers,
