Just had a call from somebody I know in the trade asking me if I would be interested in an A reg R80RT twin shock with spokes and dual seat. It is ex Police apparently and pretty tidy and just MOT`d. I may pop along and take a look on the way home today.
Not having owned and airhead, what are the things to look out for?
What would these things go for roughly?

Mark,

About £1800 being an ex police. Have a look at the pushrod tubes where they enter the crankcase..see if they are leaking. Ensure clutch and gearbox are OK. No smoke on start up ( unless been standing on the sidestand as left pot will smoke a touch ).

Doubt mileage will be known as they were fitted with an alternative/calibrated speedo which when removed on sale indictaes the bike as a zero miler.

Good bikes for gentle touring.

Probably adapted with a dual seat now.

Popped in to see it just now.
It appears to be a bike that has not been messed with at all and still has the original white paint and a thin layer of some kind of WD40 or something all over it. Not a shiney immaculate bike, but one that looks honest, if you know what I mean. The odometer shows 9K. It was owned by the chaps late father apparently and was last taxed in 2006. The chap rode it about 10 miles to get in mot`d and it passed with no advisories. It definately has a good battery as it was cranking for ages before they realised the fuel taps were off! It then fired up nicely and ticked over real smooth and the engine sounds great, Exhaust in very good condition.
It has a dual seat with a plastic base so I am guessing aftermarket? It is very soft.
Alloy rims and spokes in good condition. Has Brembo calipers.
The hazard lights do not work, but all the essential stuff does.
It didn`t have the side panels on, but I am told that they, and all the other Police bits, including panniers and frames come with it.
I have the owners number so will give him a bell to get more details tonight.

Our R80RTs (Avon & Somerset) were sold with zero mileage on the BMW odometer, as they had a separate calibrated speedo mounted on the fairing. We sold city bikes at 80k and county ones at 100k, IIRC.

I'd say that this bike's realistically worth around the £1000 mark (especially at this time of year - you may well get a bargain) - although I wouldn't tell you that if I was selling it...

Mike :D

That would be a good starting point for a project bike.

I bought 5 ex DSA R80RT's back in 2000 for £6000 the lot! All registered in 1994, with between 40K and 50K, full service history, system panniers, racks, top boxes and heated grips. They were all in excellent condition. One of them sold to a tosser here earlier this year for £1000 and I think he's still riding around on it.

I wouldn't pay more than a grand for the one you've described.

Dear Mark,

If you still know the whereabouts of this bike and its still for sale could you please contact me.

Regards Craig.

Sorry Jaber,

I meant the Ex-Police R80RT Mark was talking about. I am looking for a decent ex-police R80RT (if such a thing still exists) for Sunny Sunday transport. I fell accross this post whilst trawling the net but at only two post cannot pm Mark.

By the way your red R80 looks loverly !

Regards Craig.
