I'm just about to fit the rear crankshaft oil seal to the bike and was wondering is there any special way of preparing the seal prior to installation. I have a vague recollection of perhaps reading that it should be soaked in oil overnight or some such thing. It will be great if someone clarify for me please, based on their own experience. Here is a photo of the seal and its edge
I bought the seal from motor works and it is their new scraper type seal. I'm not sure if it's clear in the photographs but there is a lip on both the inside and outside edges. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Its supposed to be "stretched" internally slightly there is a tool chez BMW for fitting these

Personally I hate them they are so easy to damage or mark

I had one client come to me because he had 3 (that he fitted) fail on him R1150 front cover oil seal

Simples off to Local oil seal stockist 5 quid later double lip oil seal 30 mins to strip and fix and still going strong 80K later I believe

Crankshaft oil seal in place

Well gentlemen after all the faffing about and wondering if it would work or not I have managed to install the Oil seal. I heated the crankcase to about 50°C with a hot air gun and then gently located the oil seal with a hide a mallet to start it off. Then I used my home-made plywood tool to push it down with the five flywheel bolts. Seems to work okay. I used grease to locate the shim and applied a smear a oil on both the seal and the housing to help them sliding in. Thanks for the help chaps.

Last bit of information needed

As you can see from my previous pictures the seal is in snugly but I have two further questions so I can install the flywheel.
1 With this latest and improved Motorworks seal should I lubricate it before installing the flywheel ?

2 I am unclear if I should replace the flywheel bolts and should they be Loctited in place ?

Thanks in advance
