Rallye Sport - Regular or Sport suspension?

Are you chopping in your TB GSA already then? How will the GS be better for your back over the GSA?

.............
I can't get my head around why BMW would make the suspension stiffer, as they know that the majority of owners won't go properly off road, and the typical GS buyer wants comfort on the road. Seems a bit odd.

Exactly (plus stiffer suspension is not what you want off road). Re your back, which is the reason you're asking, was your GS ok before you swapped to an Adv? If it was then you shouldn't have any worries going with the normal suspension surely :nenau

I've asked Lind in Welwyn for a back to back test ride on the Rallye Sports suspension and a GSA.
They say they are sorting it out this week but that sounds too late for you.

The question is, have BMW really developed different springs or just used the GSA parts on a GS. So you get the off road hight without being a small moon.

Why have you come off a GSA because of your back?

Plausible, as having additional 10kg in fuel and another 12kg in metal/plastic that GSA has over GS, makes GSA suspension set up to stiff to carry a lighter bike like Rallye. I think this is the reason why it is stiff/harsh over standard Rallye.

Joint effort from fellow tossers solves this problem me thinks :thumb :clap:clap:clap

My bike with standard suspension is due tomorrow, however, I've had a niggling voice saying that I should get the Sport suspension.

Coming from a GSA, the sport suspension on the Rallye makes the bike the same height. This can be achieved with the extra high seat, available on the standard suspension bike, however, if you spec the Sport suspension, you can only have the lower Rallye seat. Ultimately, the seat height will be the same on both versions.

The main reason for changing from a GSA to GS is because of ongoing back issues, so I need to get this right. I'm reading mixed reviews of the Sport suspension; BMW market it as harder, and higher than standard, some reviews say it's the same suspension components/ ride height/ comfort as the GSA. If it's the latter, this would be the setup I'd want.

So, my question to anyone that's either come from a GSA onto a Rallye with Sport suspension, or to anyone that has ridden a Rallye with Sport suspension, is how hard is it? I haven't found a dealer with both on demo, so can't ride them back to back, before the usual smart arses pipe up!

If I change my order, it needs to be first thing tomorrow, as the bike I've ordered is being delivered to the dealer tomorrow!

HELP!!!!!!:D

Nutty, I've gone from a GSA LC to a Rallye sport with Premium AND Sports suspension, as I said to you there are conflicting reports around, my take on the +20mm Sport suspension was/is if that makes it the same as the GSA suspension I'll be happy and so it has proved to be thus far, the bike sits at a similar (virtually the same) height as my previous GSA, if I scroll the suspension settings the bike rises dramatically on it's suspension enough to make it too tall for me for comfort but with the self levelling set to auto ride height it's great, I don't know if the spring rates are a little firmer but the low speed ride and comfort is still very good especially over lumpy and broken surfaces, when pressing on it feels as though there is less of a tendency to squat under acceleration or dive under braking over and above the GS and GSA's ability to mask these traits, I have no regrets and have taken the bike along a variety of road types including some of my favourites which I consider something of an acid test.
I may be wrong but I think the steering geometry may be different on the GS to GSA, the GS seems a little bit quicker turning and that bit more responsive to me which may be a combination of less weight and sharper steering, it's also noticeably easier to manouvre around when stationary.
Regarding seat height, I got lucky as there was a Rallye in my dealers fitted with the low seat whilst mine arrived with the high, the customer for the other Rallye wanted a high seat so the dealer initiated the no cost swap.
I don't feel that the bike has a harsh ride is over suspension'd I'm glad I spec'd the Sport suspension, at the time of placing the order I don't know why I spec'd it, but cookie told me he would have spec'd it and so should I, that was good enough for me :D

Thanks folks. To those that have asked, the GSA rides perfectly, and is the only bike that I've owned that actually helps my back, as weird as that sounds.

The reason why I'm getting rid, is because moving/ wheeling it around does cause problems with my back. The butler is getting fed up with me calling him out to remote locations just to wheel the bike around, so I'm thinking of him really!:P

So, I want a lighter GSA that rides the same, and is easier to wheel around. If the Rallye with Sport suspension will ride the same as the GSA, on knarly pot holed strewn roads, that's the bike for me. If standard suspension will soak the bumps up better, then that's the one to go for.

Mrs Nutty said she's sleeping in the spare room tonight!:D

Thanks Steve, that's good to know. We ride the same sort of roads, so if you're saying that it rides the same as the GSA, then Sport suspension could be the way to go.

I wonder how the standard suspension with high Rallye seat would compare....

Maybe if someone that's gone from a GSA LC to the Rallye with standard suspension would be a good comparison. Anyone?

For a ride height comparison, here's my new younger and more slender sexy model parked next to a fat bird :D

That looks taller than the GSA! Or is the rider a fatty?:P

I think the beak extender and dark fork legs on the GSA make the GSA look lower whilst the lack of beak extender and light fork legs do the opposite for the Rallye, the Rallye is rider less and........the rider of the GSA is not a large chap, he wears a Medium jacket I think ;)

As I mentioned I'm try to get a back to back test ride but as a sales room junkie, I've sat on both, the Rallye with Sports suspension and tall seat and GSA with standard seat. The Rallye feels to be the same height as when you pump up the GSA to full pillion luggage setting 3.
Or there abouts.

So you're saying the Rallye with Sport suspension is the same height as a GSA set to rider plus pillion? That doesn't sound right, as the GSA will be around 910mm when set to rider plus pillion. Unless the Rallye with Sport suspension had the extra high seat?

I need a lie down.:comfort :D

For what it's worth Nutty. I have the Rallye Sport with standard ESA and in road setting it is very plush and comfortable but at the same time reassuringly firm. dynamic takes some of the 'bounce' out of it.

You may recall I was trying to decide recently whether to go for a GSA or the Rallye and rode them back to back (GSA was a 2016 demo with 200 miles on it). I loved both but knew that the GSA was slightly to tall and to big to wheel in and out my garage every day (I too have a few back twinges). I took the GSAHome and pushed it in and out my garage and now do the same every day with my Rallye. It is much easier to manhandle. I am riding the Rallye on 'min' setting and high seat setting on standard Rallye seat and it is perfect for me. A tad lower than the GSA. On High setting I would imagine it is similar to the GSA.

Go for the one you ordered tomorrow. Unless you intend to really go off road I would imagine the Sport suspension might be a compromise on the tarmac.

Now have some Horlick and get some kip :beerjug:

It was telling that all the bikes for the Off Road Skills School this year are standard Rallyes WITHOUT the Sports Suspension.

I believe there may have been a delay in getting bikes with that spec, hence why they're just fitted with regular non-ESA suspension, but Simon Pavey was willing to point out that for most riders who come through his school then the regular height suspension will be perfectly fine and in fact more suitable for his customers, as it'll be easier to get a foot down.

There does seem some confusion about the Sports suspension - even amongst the PR crew at the launch in Portugal - but it was my assumption that the 20mm Sports suspension is exactly that of the GSA and that it is a bit 'stiffer' simply because it was set up for the GSA, not the lighter GS. And that would make sense, as it would be incredibly surprising for BMW to go to the effort of recalibrating the suspension for the tiny percentage of Rallye buyers who opt for the Sport suspension, when they can just bolt the GSA items straight on.

I'd say that if you weren't intending going off road then stick with the regular suspension. Seat height with the bench seat was about the same as my regular GS on height seat setting.

Nutty, Whichever bike you choose will have the new Dynamic ESA.This means that the settings and feel of the bike will be different to your GSA.
If you tried out the road version and found it ok then stick with that, if you ordered untried then flip a coin.

That's what I said! :rob :D

Thanks folks. After speaking to one of the guys that runs the BMW off road course in the UAE this morning, and 2WH's advice, my order is now switched to Sport suspension.:thumb:beerjug:

It's not like I'll keep it long anyway!:P
