Ordered a 512 mb pc2700 DDR 184 pin off ebay last week. It has arrived but is half the height of the ram currently in my PC. Whilst it does fit the slot, the PC doesn't boot up properly - a mish mash of code on the screen and then it reboots again, and keeps doing that. Tried all the slots, tried removing my current ram, but still doesnt work. I currently have a 256 pc2700 ddr and can put in a max of 1024mb. Got the new RAm from the US so may need to send it back - the sticker says its the right type but, as I said, whilst the length is the same, the height is half that of what I had. Any ideas?

Generally it's not a good idea to 'mix n match' ram.

You should use sticks preferable from the same manufacturer and of the same value, ie; 2x512mb sticks.

Try using the 512mb on it's own.

I don't know how much it cost you, but generally cheap Ram ain't worth shit. Stick to makes like Twinmoss, Corsair, Samsung, PNY etc. These ain't going to break the bank but are good value memory. Check the link below for price guide.

SOme computer brands like Compaq, only like having Compaq memory in them.....

so you pay Compaq prices!! :(

Maybe after the horse has bolted, but. try this website / dealer. The will look at your machine, tell you what is appropriate and take you straight to the order process. Bloody ace.

Agreed, agreed

Always use Crucial - fantastic, guaranteed ordering process, great prices, free P&P and arrives the next day. Outstanding service.

Hmmm,...a tough one,.....what I would do is ;- re-start the computer, try it again, and if it doesn't work, go out for a ride, to the pub, or both.
Hope that helps,
