Hi all,
looked at an 02 1150 GS today at an "any make" dealer, it took a bit to start and when it did it rattled for a few seconds (sounded top end) cut out a few times then idled after about 30 seconds or so, i presume the bike had not been started for a while so thought nothing of it, i'm not gonna buy the bike but wondered if this would be anything to worry about if i was. it had about 34k on the clock.

steve.

Also wondered what is the normal operation of the ABS warning lamps at start up.

All 1100`s and 1150s make a very slight rattle on startup and on tickover.
More noticeable on the left cylinder.

It`s the camchain tensioner system.....the sound lessens as oil pressure is built up.

The noise can be reduced by using 20W50 oil if it`s got 10W40 in it.

A slightly harder 'knock' type rattle on the right cylinder is usually a bit of wear on the throttle body spindle...just press on the quadrant pivot pin and it should disappear.

That mileage is feck all.

Problem is buying it blind - with no prior history. couple that with it being an import - I'm sure that would adversly affect its residual value - not a problem if its a keeper though.

4 owners on a 22K bike does seem excessive though. I would be wondering 'why' it's changes hands so frequently.

too many unknowns - I would be inclined to give it a miss and keep my eyes peeled on the FS&W section.

Isn't it a bit odd that it has a 2001 plate and yet was first registered in 2003? I don't understand that at all. though for all I know could be perfectly normal.

ABS normal start-up both lights flash together. riding away theres the 'oh my god something fell off' sound and both lights go out.
a fault is normally shown by both lights flashing alternately or remaining on 'steady'

switch off and try again.

more than likely due to a low battery or too many 'gadgets' switched on with the battery slightly depressed due to cold etc. a ride to the end of the road.. a few 100 yards is usually enough to fix it. - everything off.. then 'on' and wait for 'silence' and it will very likely engage as normal.

MMmmmm

I thought that!! i'm gonna ask the man whos selling it. i think he's one of these traders that gets all the unwanted or too old PX's from the main agents,
my local dealer (manchester) has one and give me his number as the bike i want is too old for them to give a BMW approved warranty.

The ABS lamps on the afore mentioned bike was flashing alternatley, maybe it was lack of use ie low battery.

Could have been imported in 2003 but was first registered in its original company in 2001, hence the numberplate.

I've got a German imported R1150GS. No problems at all. You do need to make sure the headlights have been changed and perhaps ask to see the original clock to check the mileage.

just as an aside - there are currently 17 1150GS's on autotrader which might be worth a look at. Including a CAT D. undamaged blue/white '02 for £3.800 (probably stolen/recovered)

and thats just 50 or so miles from mancs in Retford

again - a cat d is no problem if the bikes a 'keeper'

That makes perfect sense Annette, i'm waiting for a text back off the man.

Autotrader

Yeah iv'e seen them on AT infact the black one at vivamoto is the one i viewed today, i might have a look at the cat d, i noticed theres no screen on it.

My Bike was a cat d - because it wasn't recovered until after the insurance paid out.

They will likely have factored in room for negotiation into that given price. The number of people who will buy a cat d being quite small. And january being a 'flat' month too.

Be careful, ABS pumps are favourite on these, a nice round grand will buy you one.........

I think your thinking of a servo equipped bike. The ABS only models very very rarely go wrong, and a used pump supplied and fitted would only cost around the £250 mark.
