Rattle when accelerating?

I have noticed a rattle noise when accelerating, especially 70-90 in top. It doesn't sound engine related but more like something in the exhaust downpipes?

As I'm new to these things I'd really appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Pinking

Don't ignore it , it's not normal and it's not right.

Ta for the advice.

When I get home I'm going to check the engine bars as it was dropped both sides by thieving scum who didn't get far with it.

After reading some threads it just might be a cracked bar housing but somehow I think that may be wishful thinking :(

I'm now off to do some research on pinking

Pinking is characterised by a light metallic knocking noise which is most prevalent in higher gears, with lowish engine revs and medium to high throttle openings. The noise increases as more throttle is applied.

If it is pinking, there's probably a good reason for it. Have you 'chipped' the bike or got an aftermarket exhaust? Are you running the bike on dodgy fuel like paraffin or used fish 'n' chip oil?

Hi Greg,

Ta for the info.

The bike is totally standard and the noise only really started after it had been knocked over by thieving scum - hence engine bar theory but I'm dreaming on that one.

Its 3 years old and covered 15k (2 by me) only had it 2 months.

Can pinking be fixed without remortgaging?

I don't mend em - just ride & fall off

If you deal with pinking quickly, it shouldn't cost a lot - whatever the cause!

However, if left unattended, you can end up virtually needing a new engine (see Kenny's picture above!!).

If the bike is pinking and is bog standard, you've either got some dodgy fuel or somehow the timing has become too advanced - perhaps because the Hall effect sensors have moved or become defective.

Could be a number of things - the crash bars sound like agood starting point. Also check your tool kit under seat - the front spring spanner etc loves to rattle around... cut an old mouse pad to fit inside lid and glue in place. Next check your bash plate - could have lost a bolt and loves to rattle and vibrate. Also has the oil been changed recently? I once left my oil filter wrench in place as it was stuck, intending to tap it loose later. Refitted the bash plate etc and could not work out where the rattle was from until I located the wrench trapped under bash plate and jiggling around! Same thing happened tp a mate when he got his bike back from the dealer with a 'complimentary' oil filter wrench...
Anotrher thing is to check cebtre and side stands - the rubber grommets that cushion in up position... if missing...rattle.
Also remember that often a rattle may sound as if it is coming from one spot but is in fact resonating and travelling from another. Good luck and let us know.

I was going mad trying to find a rattle which only occurred as I accelerated.

It turned out to be the metal part of my key fob which had come to rest against the handlebar & which vibrated when I gassed it. Absolutely, drove me nuts until I found it - I had visions of engine stripping & big bills........

Hope yours is something similar.
