So, I've had my bike for about 5 years now (2000 plate 1150Gs)
Every time I service it I am meticulous with valve clearences etc but still it rattles its tits off and seems to be worse when warm . It runs flawlessly but just seems to be the noisiest Tractor at the show :D . Anyway , I have put around 35000mls on it with it rattling its tits off and it now shows 97000mls . I just found a thread on cam chain tensioners and when I checked mine it has a 17mm head . Is this the older type of tensioner ?? and if so , is this likely to be my problem ??
thanks in advance . :beerjug::beerjug:

throttle bodies are fine btw .

My new tensioner has a 15mm head, the old one has a 17mm head, +1 for setting the end float near to the lower end of the spec :thumb

Wot 'ee sed.

The replacement tensioner made a big difference to my 1100 (although mainly on start up).

And another +1 for minimum rocker end float - helps noise, running, attractiveness to the opposite sex - everything.

Oil viscosity can make a difference.

Mine used to have 10w40 and was really noisy. I now use 20w50 and the bike is now a lot quieter when warm.

Rattle

Mines only done 21k and rattles on low revs. End float fine/done and valves checked. Throttle bodies balanced (valves and tbs checked 2 weeks ago by steptoe) still rattles. I do have the old camchain tensioner though.

I'm not bothered about the noise just about if any damage will result. Does the old tensioner being left in do any damage?

I believe that in bad cases the chain can thrash around enough to break the plastic chain runner blades ...
