Re-coding BMW supplied pannier locks - fail

I have changed the locks over the years on Vario pannier and aluminium luggage numerous times without issue.

I recently changed my 2017 GS to a new GSA and kept my aluminium luggage. This morning I decided I was going to recode all the locks to my new bike.

I started with the two locks on the top box - all went perfectly.

I then removed the locks from my panniers only to find that I cannot remove the wafers to change them!

I remember that I bought the 6 pannier locks from the dealer ready made for my VIN number. They look the same as other locks but I have given the wafers a good old tug on two different locks and they won't budge. I assume this means I cannot modify these locks and will have to donate more of my hard earned cash to Motorrad for 6 new locks?

And advice/confirmation would be gratefully received before I spend more muhlah.

Isn't there something about the lock wafer being inserted, or inserted the wrong way round. ( or putting a spring in the lock wafer??)

If it was a one shot only thing, there would be loads of top boxes and keys up for sale

can you remove the lock unit as an assembly from the box, it may be easier to work on loose so to speak...

have you checked the sping hasnt fallen out

If the locks are OEM coded, they are not the re-coding type.

There is a small pin locking the wafers from popping out.
In order to remove the pin you will have to remove the chromed frontplate on the barrel.

Just my thoughts..............

I bought a new topbox last Thursday, supplied by the BMW dealer, and they coded the keys too. All went well.

As I was picking the bike up, I was discussing coding locks with the young lady who actually coded the locks, and I was asking her about having boxes full of 1's, 2's, and 3's, etc, at which point she commented that yes they did, but now they have to use a new lock wafer each time !! Maybe something has changed with the locks themselves.

Thanks gents I'm fully conversant with the method and barrels are all out. knutk has confirmed my suspicions.

I will order some more next week that are not coded, do them myself and be future-proof.

My old bike is still in the dealers showroom so I might be a kind sole and give to them to the dealer to hand to the future owner rather than waste them.

Pop the silver disc off, remove be the pin and recode as before.
No need to buy new locks.

But if you do as steadysteve suggests, when you rebuild the lock make sure you replace the locking pin otherwise, in the unlocked position, the locking wafer may vibrate out as there is nothing holding it in place, see this post for an explanation. It's a fairly straightforward job and it took me about 1/2 hour a lock once I got into the swing of it.

Edit: However, it may be worth checking if the raised area is in the same orientation as shown in my pictures in the above thread, you could check this by comparing the pinned locks with your recodable locks. You may get lucky and they may have changed the design since mine were manufactured in 2014 and not need to replace the locking pin

Thankfully I bought my top box separately with the lock coding kit so swapping those was a piece of cake. Panniers back can wait as I only use them on trips.

I've just recoded two pannier locks but when I put the locks in the pannier I can't remove the key.

Never had a problem before but it's driving me mad.

All the wafers are totally flush when the key is in.

Any thoughts on where I'm going wrong would be very much appreciated.

I think you leave the very first wafer out (closest to the key hole)

Sometimes the one next to the locking wafer causes issues but yes as already stated the one nearest the keyhole is usually the problem.
