I have just purchased a 2012 49ltr top box, the lid is open and the lock is unlocked.

What I'd like to know is, do I need the original key in order to remove the lock from the case?

If no...

How do I remove the lock and what is the easiest cheapest way to make the lock fit my bike key....

Perhaps take is to the dealer??

Cheers!

There was a thread with how to remove the barrel and fit a new one. I just got a replacement blank barrel and took it together with the top box and a spare key to my locksmith in Margate (Standfast) I've been done twice now for different bikes and is much easier than trying to do it yourself.

Interesting. I have a 2013 RT top box that came off my crashed bike. It is still locked, and stupidly I handed over all the sets of keys without keeping a set or at least unlocking it first. I would love to hand it over to a new owner but I do need to get it unlocked first!

Where did you get a new barrel from? BMW?

I see if I get get a locksmith to get into it...

Hi Puggy, I haven't got a new barrel yet, but from what I've read so far, I think that you may struggle without the key if your lock is locked, can you trace the new owner with the keys, just to unlock it for you then a dealer can do the rest.

There is a utube video showing a guy using a key pick into the lock slot to withdraw the barrel, but I'm told that you have to remove a small key slotted access plug that is just inside the lid above the lock and release the barrel from inside. It could be that there are two types of lock. I think it will be a job for Pidcocks which is annoying as I don't like to be beaten!

To remove the lock you need the box open to access the slotted blank plug, but then the lock barrel needs to be in the locked position to allow you insert the pick into the small hole to release the barrel.
Shite design.

If the box is locked you can drill the lock out.

Thanks all. Probably Too much effort for me as I have a new box on my new bike.

So, if anyone interested in wrestling with it, free to a good home. It does have some smallish scratches on the top where it contacted the road - I can send a photo. Buyer collects or pays postage.

Now there is a bit of information I could have done with a few weeks ago!

My locksmith opened that type of lock in a locked case in under a minute, and that included taking it from me and into his workshop and then walking back with it opened.

It cost less than a tenner for him to fit a new keyed barrel when I handed over my new key and a blank barrel.

My GS came with two lock barrels for future pannier use.

Changing BMW locks to suit new keys is very easy and there are instructions on the web showing how.

I would carefully drill out the locked barrel before altering and fitting a replacement

I have a large Givi top box on my 1200 LC and wish I could use bike key for it but unfortunately barrels are slightly different

Pidcocks at Nottingham have offered to remove it and re-key it for about a tenner, so it's not worth me spending any more time on trying to extract it out of the box.

Thanks to all

Special thanks to Pidcocks Notts, it took them less than 10 minutes to remove and re-key my topbox lock.....cost £10.00 ..bargain!

Well done Piddy's.

Mind you it was a 4 hour round trip...but well worth it.

Many thanks Piers great to meet you.
Thank you for stopping off this morning.Really appreciate your generosity.
Best wishes
Ric.

I'll tell you what, Pidcocks, who have took some stick on here in the past, are on the up. They did the first service on my new RT in September just before we went to Germany. They fitted me in because of the trip and re set my top box lock for free while it was in, no fuss, no bother, just nice polite service. Well done Piddy's!

It's good to hear good news,I had always found them helpful in the past.
Wonder what happened to Richie Round?
