Re keying top box locks

I have seen plenty of advice on this but mostly for the plastic panniers and boxes. Has anyone seen advice on the bmw aluminium box with one side lock and one lock to the rack please?

Are you talking about the bmw metal Adv panniers/topbox ? .. if so with the lock open you can see the locking leaf that holds the barrel in place. With the key in place Poke and hold the locking down and pull the barrel out.

Thanks for your reply. I dont have the key, which is why i want to re key it, which i have seen done with other barrels. Just thought there would be a youtube instruction somwhere.

Is the box open or shut? If it's shut (and locked), you'll have to take it to a locksmith to break into it (unless you're a dab hand with a pick-lock).

Then you can access the lock-leaf like Steptoe described.

You'll also need a few spare leaves in order to change the key.

There is a very simple method of removing the barrel without a key. But i'm not going to post how on the internet, or send anyone a PM.

A little bit of searching would show that most of the BMW accessory or aftermarket suppliers/breakers, eg Motorworks will stock them - they're a standard BMW part.

I'm not surprised that Steptoe doesn't want to describe how to remove the lock barrel openly on the internet... that's a fairly easy way to open the floodgates to everyone's panniers being stolen. It's not just honest owners who can read this site....
