Trying to help a friend who's got in a muddle with his 8 year old Mac book pro (forgotten passwords, virus etc) I have suggested a factory re-set, This looks fairly easy to do but two questions, does it re-set to original OS? is it possible to copy the iPhoto programme to a stick to re-install if a newer OS is used?
Anyone done this, any problems to look out for?

Provided you have the original OS OS disc there should be no particular problem. Stick the disc in the slot and restart the machine holding down the 'Alt' key and then reinstall from the silver disc.
(I'm presuming an 8-year old MacBook will have a disc slot?)

You will likely want to reformat the disc (on the install menu) - this will mean you wil LOSE ALL THE DATA on t he machine.

iPhoto will install itself from the disc.

Hi Chap,
Thanks for reply, not sure if he has original disc, looked at various info on-line which suggests you can re-set without disc, just need apple id to sign back in again and then it will re-install OS.Does that sound right?

I'm not sure that is true for a mac that old - I could be wrong.
Restart the machine holding 'ALT' and report what options you are given.

either way, iPhoto runs on latest El Capitan OS-X, it just no longer comes with it.

Do you know if you can copy the programme, say to a memory stick, and then put it on the latest OS?

Just download it from the app store when you've sorted the other problems out.

You can also just copy it and it's library over to new install.
