Re-spoking GS Wheels?

Like the exhaust headers it's the chrome that rusts. That is why "stainless" pipes develop rust spots.

I'll repeat. those spokes are NOT rusty. the black that can be seen is no more than road muck that will wash off. Seems really odd to me that the OP is considering replacing Stainless Steel spokes that are dirty. with another set of spokes.

You're wrong. The R1150GS had chrome-plated spokes. R1150GS Adventures had stainless steel spokes. Don't take our word for it though, just ask your dealer :thumb

slowkitty, you can get the stainless steel spokes from any BMW dealer, getting the old spokes out is an absolute bastard job though. It took me an hour to remove 3 spokes. :(

dear me.. I do love this forum.

Ask a dealer? what exactly do I ask?? did they put cheap spokes on the 1150? Chrome plated rubbish (that rusts) instead of the stainless that were on the 850/1100?

how silly.

No.. I won't make a fool of myself.. I suggest YOU ask the dealer.. ask em to look up the parts fiche for your bike and see what it says.

ask them to read it slowly down the phone to you.

Then come back here and report... I'll try not to laugh.

Too late for that :comfort

I damaged 3 spokes on my 1150 Adventure so ordered 3 new ones. I just asked for spokes for an 1150GS as I thought they were all the same.

The spokes I received were chrome-plated. I had to re-order the correct stainless steel spokes. Perhaps I just happened to receive the only 3 chrome-plated BMW R1150GS spokes in the known universe. I still have two of them, so here's a nice picture for you.........

If you were sent chrome plated then they sent the wrong part. (no real surprise there.)

what is the part number for these chrome plated spokes you were sent?

the spokes for the 1150 GSA are exactly the same.. part no. included, as the spokes from the 1150 AND the 850/1100. and thats both wheels.

the spokes never changed throughout the lifetime of the bikes. 1993 - 2005.

May not be relevant to 1150's, but I needed to change two spokes on my 1200GSA and they were a complete barsteward to get out, and they were not corroded at all. Do 1150's use the same tubeless rims?

Exactly the same... in fact. the (bare bones) spoked wheel on the front of the standard 1200 is identical to the front wheel on my own 1100.

they both have the same part number.

The GSA has a different number due to it being a different colour.. but that aside. the front is again - identical.

Dragging up an old thread

Hi

Just noticed a bent spoke on my 1100gs. The bike is 17 years old with over 100,000 miles so the wheels are in pretty poor condition. I suspect the spoke has been bent for a while (perhaps when I came off in 2011).

The bike is due some money spent on it so my question is do I get some new/second hand wheels or have my excisting ones overhauled ie which way is cheaper?

P.S My hiedenau K60 front is not holding pressure, I suspect a leaky bead.

Grateful for any info.

Secondhand is cheaper, but rebuilt give you as new wheels.

Your Heidi will be leaking from the bead which is common with these if not seated right. The only thing you can do is re seat it with lots of tyre lube or tyre butter as they call it in the states. If they go on dry, they will leak as the walls are so hard:thumb2

Motobiker is totally wrong. GSA has stainless spokes, gs has crome plated steel it's that easy.
The 800? No idea:nenau

I agree my about the spokes my R850GS has chrome spokes but have ordered 2 as spares I pick them up tomorrow lets wait and see!!!!

I agree my R850gs has chrome spokes 100% but I have ordered a couple of spares as they are so cheap so let's see what mr BMW sends!!!!

If I do get stainless I would think its only because it is now only cost effective to do 1 spoke fits all.

Need to do the wheels on my 1100. The paint/powder coat is flaking off the hubs and corroding underneath and the chrome is flaking off the spokes and the spokes are going rusty.

I think I have 3 options.

1. Get the whole wheel blasted and powder coated. Bit of a bodge, not sure it will look good and not sure how the powder coat will stand up to the flexing of the spokes.

2. Replace the spokes 1 at a time using pitch to tighten with stainless spokes. Polish the rims as best I can and remove the paint from the hubs and repaint with hammerite as best I can. Not sure how it will look and how long the hammerite will stand up. Semi bodge.

3. Strip the rims from the hubs, send the rims for polishing and maybe anodising or powder coat. Send the hubs for blasting and powder coat. Send the refurbished hubs and rims to devon wheel co and ask the to rebuild with stainless spokes. In my eyes durable and a proper job but no doubt expensive for devon wheel co bit.

Not sure what to do yet - I would probably do 2 if I was confident I would get it right.....

Anyone else any ideas or ideas of cost for 3?

Thanks

Tom

My 2001 GS has Chrome and they were black when I bought the bike bought some Brillo pads and an hour later they all look like new!

Devon rim company

I used them to do a set of 1100 rims, bloody lovely job really looked the part. Satin black hubs and rims with stainless spokes and nipples supplied by them. I supplied them with a set of wheels and traded my originals into them as part of the deal. Kept costs down for me and they then had a pair they could use as exchange items to save the customer having to supply a spare set or have the bike off the road whilst waiting for their own wheels to come back. Give them a call they are really nice but its not cheap as the setting up is very time consuming.

I wouldn't worry yourself too much. The question was asked nearly three years ago :D

Thanks Bilko, I'm having a tyre man look at it on Saturday and hope to get it seated right.
Think for now I will buy a spoke and just try to fit it.
