Kin ell, just rolled the ST out for a ride.....ignition on......fuel gauge shows full, which is odd as it was only half full yesterday! Ignition off, back on again.....now showing completely empty, warning triangle on and, bizarrely, 230 miles to empty....my bike doesn't have the 'computer' as such, just basic info, and it only ever gives 'miles to empty' when the triangle comes on, so its never shown more than 50-ish! 230 is what I assume it would show with a full tank if the bike had the computer. Strange indeed - the bastard thing knows I'm off on my hol soon!!

Is it fuel strip or float gauge type?

Fuel strip can be zapped with a piezo gas lighter. It will probably fail again but the job is safe to do.

Its the strip type. I spotted the repair on Youtube and might give that a go. I've got the bike booked in over at RGM in Croston for Roy to fit me a new one in a couple of weeks - I know that might not last long, but I can't be arsed with having the warning light flashing and using the trip for refills!

The fuel strip should be a great idea but these have fundamental faults. BMW will fit you a new one for about £200 but it could last weeks or months and fail again. Its however likely to hassle you for its entire 24 month warranty. How many times a year do you need to be returning to your dealer for a warranty fix?

There is recent thread for fitting a Dutch made adapter that uses the later twin cam type float sensor on older bikes.

I fitted a separate float gauge.
