Thanks for all the advice and sorry for the slow post. It took me some time to get myself organised and replace the battery. However, I did get an Odyssey battery and it did solve the problem. I'm not blown away with the starting power and to be honest I think next time I probably would get a BMW original. The battery doesn't quite fit properly so to get it in snug and to insulate it from the tank has required quite a lot of modified garden hose and gaffer tape. It's an attractive looking job.

Since I swapped it round a few months ago I've had no clock blanking/abs resetting problems so it does seem to have been a slightly duff battery and not the starter motor or earthing fault.
