Hi Folks

I recently replaced the rear brake pads on my 06 GSA however when I went out today with wife on the back, I realised that I couldn't hold the bike stationary on a hill stop and had to feed in some front break.

When we got home, I comared my foot brake to that of my mates bike and his had no play in the pedal however mine did. To adjust the play, do I need to remove the little cover and adjust the tension with the two nuts on either side of the brake and how tight must it be.

Any advice appreciated thanks.

Erm , I may be wrong, but is it not a hydraulic disc brake ?. If so why would you need an adjuster ?. you close up the pads when applying the brake and when you release the brake the pads rest just off the disc.

There are two measurements. Firstly the pedal stop bolt should be about 11mm from the pedal to the top of the bolt. Secondly the master cylinder clearance is set by gently pushing the pedal down until you feel that the push rod is just touching the master cylinder piston. At that point there should be 2-3mm between the top of the brake switch lever and the pedal stop- adjusted by the pushrods linkage.

If it was fine before you changed the pads it should still be ok so something is wrong.
By play do you mean peddle travel?

Right... I was bit premature with the pedal adjustment stuff..... Have you Pumped back out the pistons after changing the pads and are the pads aligned in the caliper correctly?

Well are you folks able tohold your bikes on a hill with the rear break only, I changed the pads because I felt that the rear brakes were weak and that I was tramping them so hard.

The pedal play - appears that mty break pedal can be pushed down about 2-4 mm before the servo's kick in.

Yes I can and I can also lock my back wheel at will but you wont be able to do that since it looks like you have ABS. You should still easily be able to hold the bike on a hill with it though. Again you shouldn't have to adjust the peddle in any way so something is wrong. I don't know anything about ABS on these bikes though so will bow out. I take it that the bike pulls up normally on the front brake?

She does have ABS however the rear brake I have always found to be softish and was told that I should be using the front brake most of the time which I do however when I was two up last weekend and had to stop on a hill I found that the rear brake alone would not hold me stationery.

I have adjusted the rear brake since and took away the slight slack in the cable so know I have a tight brake pedal without any play and will give it a go tonight. Pads and brake fluid were changed about a month ago.

Thanks for the help thus far.
