Rear brake bleeding

The rear brake lever has a long travel making the brake useless. After bleeding the air out it will be fine for a couple of months but within six months will need bleeding again. Air must be getting in somehow but can't see where.
 
I think you're probably right.
If you're looking for probable causes, I would suggest the rear master cylinder.
How old is the bike?
 
It's a 2014 bike with 10k miles. I mentioned it when it was in or a service last year and still in waranty but the dealer thought it was normal !
 
Hopefully it was recorded at the service it which case I reckon they should address the issue for you.
 
My first service included a costed brake fluid change which also drastically improved the rear brake pedal travel.
 
Had this problem on my way to Spain last year . 2 year old Gsa. Called in at Lind Welwyn (old SWB) and was told it was quite a common problem , but no fix had been forthcoming.
Lind were excellent . It was a Saturday morning but they whipped it into the workshop and by the time I had got a cup of coffee it was fixed ! .... and no charge
 
2014 plate, same as yours bleed the brakes... solid pedal for a few months then starts to travel further, i noticed that if you apply the front brake first the rear travel is not as bad. but a bit crap as no other bike i have had has ever done this, but they have all been Honda,s :confused:

You should have experienced the 1200 Multistrada. Rear brake was AWOL all the time. Known issue on them.

On the Hondas (I've had a few) you can't feel the CBS operating due to the way it works mechanically

The BMW system seems to be a lot more active, I hardly use the back brake pedal now but when I do I can feel it moving under my foot as the system adjusts the pressure, felt very strange to begin with
 
Looks like a common problem. I will just bleed the rear brake more often as it takes minutes to do.
 
There is an adjustment for the blow-by clearance of the master cylinder piston that might be out of whack, especially if you have adjusted the brake lever at some point. Worth checking (by you or dealer), since if the piston doesn't retract enough it will not push enough fluid through when you step on it.
