Rear brake calliper torque?

Just get a big breaker bar and put all your weight on it and it will be fine

Do you really tighten calliper bolts with a torque wrench?

Having seen pics of a loose rear caliper trashing a spoked rear wheel, I always use a dab of thread lock on my caliper mounting bolts.

what as strange question. I can understand the self satisfied idea of being such a highly skilled mechanic:blagblah that one can tighten bolts by feel and experience but why the hell not use a torque wrench on critical bolts like brake caliper bolts? Ok, I don't torque such bolts as those needing only 8nm, but brake, wheel, suspension and internal engine components? Hell yes, and loctite where specified. I do my mechanicing with the right tools to the right specifications - after all I'm riding the bike. Good to hear that Bear does the same.

Ive attended mikeyboys workshop days, and I recall us speaking about thread lock, but I can't recall if it should be used on calliper bolts or not?

Are you saying that these bolts are not important enough to torque? Does it not matter if they come loose because you have not done them up tight enough? Are you not worried that they might shear off because you have done them up too tight?

Perhaps you should not be working on the brakes if you need a torque wrench to do up calliper bolts!

i don't need a torque wrench but I choose to use one. If you had chose to use one instead of apparently sneering at those who do, you would know that 8nm translates as hand tight on smaller diameter bolts. How many degrees passed hand tight is 24, 50, 60nm? Only a torque wrench will tell you with any degree of accuracy. Maybe you shouldn't work on brakes if you can't recognise that simple fact. There's a good little troll.

I only use a torque wrench for nuts/bolts requiring more than 50nm. Thats because my wrist clicks at 49nm due to arthritis.

Brake pads successfully changed. Old ones were as bare as a bare thing. New pads supplied by Steptoe who posted them quickly for me, thanks :thumb2
