Rear Brake Pads......

Hi All,
My 2008 GS non-abs, needs new rear brake pads and as far as I am aware, the brakes are not linked on this bike but please correct me if I am wrong as I very often am
After using the search facility and going round in circles, do I need organic or sintered for the rear?
The bike has Bmw pads in the front as they were fitted by Bmw when I had a brake problem under warranty about 18 months ago but no idea what is in the rear?
Am I correct in assuming organic pads wear faster but don't wear the disc as much with the possibility of brake fade under heavy use, and sintered give better braking with less fade at the expense of eating brake discs?
What do other people use?

After 20y break from riding I bought a 1200gs which was then serviced by N.Oxford. After awhile they asked if I was dabbing the rear brake because of all the dust in back brake and suggested i switch to sintered. Eventually i realised a bit of forward planning and most bends (certainly on familiar roads in Blighty) could be tackled under engine braking alone which seemed to be an economical modus operandi (brake pads, discs, tyres and mpg), tho appreciate that for many that's not the point of having a gs!

I've used these for years and they are excellent.

I've got no idea about organic, sintered etc and neither do I care too much. All I know is the Ferodo's offer great stopping power and last well on my 2006 GSA which will be teh same as yours..

http://www.ferodoracing.com/pdf/catalogues/Ferodo_motorcycle_catalogue.pdf will tell you what pads you need - you can then use the cross reference section in the same document to find the equivalent pad from other makers.

Personally, I would just go with whatever Ferodo recommends - their pads work well and are a fraction of the price of the BMW part. I believe Steptoe stocks them in his online shop.

+1 i have them on the front, and just popped a pair in the rears last weekend

....most bends.... could be tackled under engine braking alone which seemed to be an economical modus operandi

Brake pads are much cheaper than replacement gearboxes !

You should not use sintered pads (hh) unless you have them on the front too.

Then again maybe it's just marketing bullshit ?

The brakes are not linked so I can't see the reason for not using on the rear?? I could understand if they were linked but as a stand alone brake, surely it could be either?

Allegedly, due to sintered working better as they get hotter compaired to organic which work better at lower temperatures then fade earlier, it can cause rear brake imbalance and the rear wheel to lock quicker.

If it's standard bmw pads, they'll be Brembo, which came out well in RiDe magazine test many moons ago.

Buy them from somewhere reputable, too many forgeries about now and your life really is worth the extra tenner you thought about saving.

A 1m difference in stopping distance, can mean living or dying !

BMW told me to not use sintered in back unless sintered are used in front because they will cause the linked braking to over brake the rear.

BMW also told me that their standard organic are fine on an ABS bike. They are not. Ordinary organic pads were down to the metal in under 4000 miles. Unless you like replacing discs it needs high spec organic or sintered.

I’ve used sintered both ends no problems. I now have Ferrodo platinum organic in the back that replaced the chewed away OEM organic rear pads. They seem to be lasting much the same as sintered. Hopefully less aggressive to the disc.

I put them on the front some time ago, feel is good,

My rear had Brembo reds, but the disc looked quite scored, so i put Ferodo's in, lets see how they do . Mind you i havnt tried them yet lol
