A few weeks ago I decided to give the rear brake a wee bleed - felt a bit spongy?. Anyway, the bleed nipple decided to shear off - I've used the nipple before so I don't know if I perhaps over-tightened it or it's had a knock? but as soon as I touched it with the spanner off it came!!
I noticed that the nipple is actually fitted in a hex-head plug screwed into the caliper - I checked and this comes out easily and is, in fact, sealed by a recessed o-ring, so I thought the sensible thing to do was order a new nipple and a new plug - but when I spoke to the dealers they told me the plug must be considered part of the caliper - 'cos it's not shown on the fiche!!(true).
I've got the new nipple, but still need the plug 'cos the sheared nipple can't be budged - has any other GSer had this problem??, surely you don't need to get a new caliper just to get a new plug that screws in anyway?. I can bleed the brake without the nipple but would prefer to get things back to normal.
Anybody got any info??

I had this happen recently, what I did was this...

Put the hex head plug (with broken nipple) into a vice, find a torx bit which is slightly larger than the nipple and tap it into what's left of the nipple (that's if you can - I was lucky with the way it broke), then unscrew the nipple from the plug.

Good luck :D

I had this a few years ago,

your dealer must be pants tho' cos I went to blue bell in crewe [not the sharpest of outfits by any imagination] and even they got the parts right

34 21 2 314 017 - nipple vent screw -around £3.70

only problem is that the rear brake pipework [ the horizontal rigid stuff] can be a bugger to bleed

Unfortunately that part no, No 10 in the picture is different to what is needed.

The bit thats needed and not shown on a parts list is the hex nut below the bleed nipple.

Now that might not help Grizzly but it might clarify the situation

er, Pragers me old chum,

the part number is from the invoice for the bit itself, and was a hex head "bolt" with an O ring to seal it to the caliper, and a shiney new nipple screwed into the bolt

Honest

Your Right Pete

Cheers Pete,
The nipple that Chris mentions is not a problem - I've already got a new one. The problem is the artistic licence B_W have used when drawing up the parts fiche - it's not as if the hex plug is Loctited in or anything - it comes out easily and is sealed with a recessed o-ring - so it's obviously meant to be removable/replacable? - it's not the dealers fault - if they can't get a part number off the fiche their stumped.

George, the bit you want , I think is part no 34 32 7 673 647 bit No 7 in the pic, "Screw plug with ventilation"

Hope this helps Pete A

Thanks Chris and Pete!!

Thanks Chris that sounds like the bits I need, if not then surely Pete's number will do it? I'll get back in touch with dealer to sort something out - thanks for you help guys.

Get Stainless ones from Motobins

Hi Grizzly,
Just been through the same problem and opted for replacing with Stainless Steel.
Got mine from Motobins:
Caliper Nipple Part No 80048S
Nipple Holder Part No 80049S
Good long term fix.
Cheers, Rob.:beerjug:

That Sounds Better??

Thanks Rob,
Thats what I'll order - the part number supplied by Chris G is the same part I already ordered - and got - it's only the nipple, the technician at the local dealer assures me that the hex plug is not available - crazy, he agrees. The part no Pragmatix suggested is for the 1200 and is in fact a banjo bolt with a nipple - no good. The motobins stainless parts seem to be the answer - thanks.

Bleed nipple and nut for rear caliper

I've just ordered one from www.motorworks.co.uk and guess what . . . they get this problem all the time.

They do the nut and nipple in stainless steel for about £15 and they are in stock

Motobins also do them -

This is what it looks like when it's fitted, i carry them in stock, almost like a service item

Mine sheared off when I service the rear caliper yesterday!:(

Do you have any in stock?

Should I drill out the sheared stubb or replace both?
