Rear Caliper Bolts

At the weekend was washing the bike and noticed that the front bolt holding the rear caliper was missing. On closer inspection the second bolt was almost falling out too.

Have now put a new bolt in and tightened the second one.

Out of interest, anyone else found that these have worked loose?

Bike an 1150 GSA.
 
Not come across that in the 50k+ on the Adventure nor the previous 1150:eek:
Is it new to you? Who does the brakes? Torquing is crucial in these ares.
 
No, did 96,000 miles on my 1150, never once found them to be loose. Did always use a torque wrench on them except the once I had to change them part way through a trip.
 
I hate stainless bolts, they gall, they break, I love electroplated high tensile, but do not live in your salt spray mud island...
 
Some people use Copperslip on the threads. Don't! :blast

Torque them (although I rarely do:augie), check them every so often.
 
It was somewhat concerning I must say!

New pads were fitted at a bike garage at the last MOT - a lesson not to necessarily trust that they do everything right!

I'll certainly check periodically and re-torque from now on.

I hope you went back to tell them they're a bunch of cnuts……a pretty major oversight :eek:

Whilst it would appear that the fitter may have messed up it isn't a certainty and there is no way to prove that he did so that may be a bit premature. :augie
 
i don't think they worked loose. they were more likely never tightened.

copperslip would be fine on the bolts, but you'd need to lower the torque setting used. or get someone experienced to do them up by hand.

Brake calliper bolts do not 'work loose' if they are tightened correctly. Whilst I appreciate your reticence to allocate blame, what happened could have been extremely dangerous and possibly life threatening. Wouldn't it be wise to make sure it couldn't happen to someone else?

Calling them a bunch of c.unts is bound to ensure it doesn't happen again:D
 
I'm probably the most ham fisted here and I can say with authority, if they were done up tight they would not be loose. I'd be putting on my size twelves if I were you. One is a mistake. Two loose means they were not bolted back on. What else did they work on? Is that loose too?

Pish, talked mine up, 2 hours later they were still in the same place looking bored. Nowhere near as great as I'd made them up to be:D

Should be Aluslip used on Steel bolt going into Alloy caliper
