I was at Scrimmingers the other day discussing options for when my diff goes (dont you love the optimism!!) he does a rebuild service and also retro fits a breather hole so you can use proper oil levels again!! Dont work for him not even a mate but he knows what hes doing and doesnt charge BMW rates!

OK, I`ll ask the obvious question. What vehicle are you talking about ? , as a bike has no differentail just a final drive.:):):)

Pedant 1, Bloke trying to be helpfull 0.

Happens alot on here!

Who/what's Scrimmingers?

Sorry to be asking, but I spend more time on the bike, than dreaming about being Charlie Boorman.

And I dont use my spot/fog lights unless it's foggy.

It actually looks far simpler than I had imagined (for those with the tooling and skills) I am now even more surprised there are not companies offering rebuilds or even readily available exchange units at sensible prices.

Susrpised he left one of the bearings in though, I thought it was this small needle roller that often broke up, seemed very silly to me to leave it when you have gone as far as stripping the unit :nenau

Correct me if I am wrong, but the main bearing that goes wrong is the pinion bearing- was the case with mine.

If Scrimingers are definately offering a rebuild service, then I may get my expensive doorstop sent off and fixed to have as a spare in case my 2nd hand one that came from Motorworks goes pop, which it will at some stage at the most inconvenient moment.

Seeing as it is a bank holiday and nobody is open, can someone confirm that
a) scrimingers definitely offer this service
b) they replace all 3 bearings, roller, needle and pinion
c) how much it all costs

There are loads of threads about FD's but to my knowledge there isnt one that has a concrete answer as to who does it and how much it costs. Would be great to get a definite answer so we all know where to go.....

Liability.

"Someone" rebuilds it. It fails again . It's given back to "someone" to rebuild again and posted on ukgser that the rebuild failed.
And seeing as new replacement final drives have failed in a very short time the perfectly rebuilt rebuilds could come back several times and the owner will want someone to blame and not be expected to pay each time..

Why would "someone" want to be tasked/saddled with picking up the tab for a part that may well have a design flaw.

Scrimmingers, bloke in Sleaford builds classic racing airheads, Airhead engines in planes and lots of restorinbg and building. He does my servicing for me.

I only do about 12-15K a year myself, though I did stop in the ice for a fortnight.

As to Charlie, if it got me a night with his missus, I would dream away!!

a) Yes
b) I assume if you ask
c)FIIK!

Hes online and in Sleaford, so when you finish pop him an email over,

I'm having a go

My FD has 65k up it now and it has had movement in the pinion shaft for the last 30k or so,I have been checking the abs sensor every 2k or so recently and there has been a lot more metal on there.

There is also a bit more movement at the axle shaft, along with my paranioa I have decided to refresh it before it lunch's itself.

Just bought the various bearing's and seals from BMW and that came to £225 trade,
probaly could have saved a bit of money on the bearings by using a bearing factor but I wanted them avaliable as soon as I strip it.

I will do a full how I did it on here, but bare with me as I have to make the various jigs and pullers as I go:thumb2

Emailed Scrimingers over the weekend, and Steve has replied- see below.

"Hello Haydn,

In short yes we do overhaul the the R1200 bevel, the labour cost is £150 plus vat. We always change all of the seals, but the bearings are inspected and replaced as necesary depending on reason for overhaul, mileage etc. We can also fit breathers so that the designed quantity of oil can be put in (230cc) without seal weapage.

Regards,

Steve"

Seems I may be getting my expensive doorstop overhauled sometime soon....

Is this not the bearing in question?:-

UPDATE:

I just recalled this important point last night.

At first glance the new crown wheel needle bearing looked like it could be installed flipped any way. However, this is not the case. There is a definite front and back to it. One side of the bearing sleeve is shallower than the other. This allows gear oil to penetrate the bearing easier. This side of the bearing should be installed toward the inside the housing where all the gear oil is for improved lubrication. There is no mention of this in the shop manual, and we almost missed it. Sorry no pics, but is pretty obvious when you look at it.

Ill add this to the OP.

Safe travels.
