Before I go off on one with the dealer.....can anyone else hear their pads catching on the disk when pushing the bike about and riding for that matter? Mine made a noise when riding but not when being pushed about before the disk and pads were changed. It sounds terrible since and I want to be prepared for "they all do that Sir" when it goes back in on Thursday.

regards...Rob

Yep,

mine does it when i put the bike on the centre stand and try to spin the wheel, it will move freely then start to grind at a particular point. i was sure my disc was slightly warped, so i put a thread on here a couple of weeks ago. sounds like yours is more pad related than disc though. i have decided to keep an eye on it till the 6k service and, as it doesnt seem to be having any bad effect on the bike, will get it checked out then. I guess though if mine is rubbing with worn pads, what will it not be like with new ones??? aargh :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

Usually the pads will drag very slightly on the disk on any disk brake. If the wheel moves freely when on the centre stand, then you'll be OK. If the wheel rotation is positively stopped by the brake i.e. it stops abruptly when you rotate it rather then coming to a gradual stop, then the pads are binding a bit. However if this was the case I'd expect the disk & caliper to be piping hot after even a short ride.

Most likely is that the new pads are a different material to the old ones as the old ones wore out in about 10 seconds. As a result the noise may be different.

Mine's the same!Though I've 13k under the same pads now and had no problems.Just been to Europe on a 3k round trip and never put a spanner to it ('cept the one ridin'),so I don't think it's anything to be concerned with.
I also get an embarassing squeal from the front occasionally but it does it's job so I reckon Tobers may be right about the compound! :thumb

It's a much more metallic sounding noise than usual and results in a droaning sound (like a wheel bearing on its way out) when on the move. The bike has only done 900 miles and the disk and pads were replaced last week at 700 miles because the original was out of spec. The noise from that set however was a lot less than this. Chief mechanic is having a look on Thursday.

thanks for your inputs...Rob

I think you'll find that the pads on most bikes will drag and cause noise, especially when cold. There should probably be less resistance after riding the bike and them warming up.
Note that as specified by BMW, the rear friction pad material is different to that of the front.

My rear pads just catch on the same point of the disc and after a revolution of the back wheel will bring the wheel to a stop (bike on centre stand, turned by hand).

It's not enough to worry me but I will raise it at my 6000 mile service when it comes up, especially as I've already had my front discs replaced due to being warped.

Nadeem, you had your rear disc replaced didn't you? How badly warped was it and how did that manifest itself - I could feel the buckled front discs through the brake lever, could you feel the rear disc through the (hand) brake lever?

Ask me one on sport!

The rear disk was very hot after riding home in comparison to the front and I only used the lever to stop.

Who won the 1923 World Ping-Pong Championship?

:D

Greg

PS Has your 1150 got linked brakes? That might explain why your rear disc was hot.

My rear disc was catching previously and I asked teh same question - with the exact same symptoms...the rear disc ended up badly lipped and was replaced under warranty last week - the new one seems to be catching as well now - on centre stand the wheel doesn't spin at all ...btw are you now all aware of the front brake shudder 'fix' all dealers are carrying it out on all 1200's ...

Errrr no.... more info?????

Hi gang new here, great site BTW.

**droaning sound like a wheel bearing on its way out **
My 12 does all of these things, the rear brake and the droaning, the droaning goes when i pull in the clutch. Williams are going to take a look at it for me, soon i hope! also i get a sort of clicking now and again from the rear end, a bit like the old Mini CV joint sound just before they gave up.

Errrr.... they basically change the washers on the disc bolts - making it less prone to vibrations as I understand it...call your dealer if you have the problem of a slight juddering ...

Nadeem .........I may be wrong but I think the details you have posted above refer to the front brake squeal modification.................Had mine done and seems to have done the job.

Dealer's infop says it also stops the shudder - I didn't have any squeals...

Well that must explain why I never had any "shudder". Two mods for the price of one so to speak. ;)

Yeah, I had the same mode done to mine to cure the shudder, only trouble was it didn't :(

New discs did :)

Don't know much about getting shudder from the rear brake, I'm lucky to get any braking out of it in the first place (by application of the rear lever anyway). The disc is however looking a tad worse for wear after only 17.5k miles. Its also eaten the best part of three sets of pads, which is a bit excessive. I'm going to have a go at getting a new disc on my next service by claiming excessive wear....worth a go I think. Hopefully get the front disc mod done at the same time.

Same mileage, same problem? Knackered rear disc on my forth set of pads, let us know how you get on. (I've not used my rear brake pedal for the last two sets of pads in a desparate ploy to extend their life, it did'nt work!!)
