Rear Break Pad wear

Mibbies sound daft - - are you 100% sure that your not gently catching the rear brake lever with your foot ?

I got through one set in 30,000 miles on my 2019 1250GS and one set in 3,500 miles on my 2024 1250RT. Same type of riding. Have BMW changed the pad compound, or the linking bias?

When the r1200gs lc first came out they were destroying rear pads at an alarming rate , by the first service the ones on my 2014 r1200gsa were half worn .

They changed the rear pad compound and I believe there was an ecu update to alter pressure on the rear linked braking ststem which cured the issue.

First pads lasted 1000 miles , same with the second set , next replacements lasted until 13,000 miles

Makes you wonder🤫

The calipers are badged BMW,are they Brembo or Hayes ?

My 1250 seems to use rear pads quickly so I have a 2 monthly reminder in my phone to check them.
The one thing that always seems to need sorting is the retaining / slide pin. I chuck it in my pillar drill and use some fine abranet to remove the rust so the pads can slide freely again.

If mine goes the same way I will swap it out for a titanium item, sod derusting it every five minutes.

If you know where to get one from I'm all ears.

EDIT - I found a stainless steel item at Shaw Stainless. They don't list a specific R1300 item but I'll be surprised if it isn't the same.

The Brembo rear caliper looks identical between later GS water cooled models from what I can see.

Stainless should be fine seeing as it is a removable pin rather than and a bolt screwed into alloy.

Oberon Performance are not far from me. I got them to make up new starter push buttons years ago for hexheads (from a pattern I provided) after owners had issues with the circlips breaking and the buttons falling out. I could probably do the same for some Brembo caliper pins if there was a demand for them.

This is a problem that goes back to my GS1150 of 15 years ago. The single piston sliding calliper is prone to corrosion on the retaining pin which causes pad drag. The only solution is (as someone said above) clean the pin with emery paper and add copperslip grease every 5,000 miles or so.
