I know I'm going to get crucified for asking....but, believe me when I say I searched, found what I needed to know, forgot it, and now can't find it again!

So, profuse apologies in advance.....

There's no play on my 1200ST's rear wheel at all at the 'quarter to three' position. There is a bit (think 1mm) at the 'half past twelve' position, with an obvious 'click' when moving the wheel. Is there a get-it-done-now-before-it-explodes issue that needs sorting?! :nenau I'm off to Spain on the ST at the end of the month, so I'm rapidly running out of time if so!

Cheers,

Pete

Think you've answered your own question ..

Forgetting any perceived play, what is making the click? ,

could be a dry UJ, could be spline wear, could be nothing?? ,

I'd sort the click first, it could be related

Ta for the reply....and lack of flaying! :D

I serviced the drive only a couple of months ago - rear joint was fine, splines well-lubed. FWIW, the 'click' happens at the point when I push/pull the wheel at the 12.30 positions...if that makes sense.

Is there any wheel side to side play?
There a 2 groups of bearings in there.
-The big main bearings: the wheel spins on. If you feel and side to side play when you hold the wheel and wiggle it. Any play here will need replacement bearings. These bearings are easy to get at.
-The pinion bearings: These are the bearings from the drive shaft. Wear here would give you radial backlash. The only real way to check these for play is to swing down the FD and wiggle the end of the spline to see if there is any play.
-Also check the drive shaft UJ's for play.
-The condition of the oil is a big indicator. Clean oil should mean all is well (for now).
See my old thread it may be of assistance.

That was an interesting read, thanks. :thumb2

If, by side-to-side play, you mean movement when pushing/pulling the wheel at the 2.45 positions, then no, there's none at all there.

This reply in your thread - Most of the drive box failures are due to 'axial play' - ie you can feel the wheel 'knocking' when you pull and push the wheel between the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. - sounds like my issue, although my noise is a click, nothing as big as a knock!

Pete

To me, the "knock" is secondary. If there is any perceptible play when rocking the wheel while holding it 12 and 6
then a rebuild is looming. If there isn't any oil leaks and the play is just perceptible then you will
probably get away with it for a while, i did with mine, in fact (on a previous bike) i got a long way with it before it finally shouted enough.

Mine had side play any wheel position for at least 10,000 miles. When the wheel seal failed at 50K I sent to Mike at Overland Classic. He said all bearings were "ready". I think it's false economy to fit just a new wheel bearing to a FD with significant miles.

Hmmmmm, lots to think about. The ST's done 28k miles. It was in at Jim Hill's a few weeks ago - that was for a TB sync to try to cure the vibes I mentioned in a previous thread. While it was there, he gave it a general once-over....the TBs were more or less spot-on, so the vibes were from elsewhere....and he did give the rear wheel a good tugging, thinking about it. I'm sure he'd have mentioned anything he thought amiss. I don't think anything would have developed in the 250 miles I've done since then...would it?!

I think I need a professional opinion! I'll give Jim a call later this morning and see if I can pop down with it.

Thanks for the replies chaps, appreciated. :thumb2

If the FD was causing vibration it would probably fall apart in a few miles so it's unlikely to be "that" bad. Vibs could be the actual drive shaft U/Js.

The vibes I posted about previously seem to have gone now - or, at least, the really noticeable ones have.

The odd thing is, the bike seemed fine when I rode it into the garage last November - all I've done is to service it bit by bit till it came out of hibernation in March. Perhaps its all in my mind!

Pete

you lot are evil :reaper

I went to check my drive based on all the comments above :(

No play at 9&3 but some movement at 12 & 6, guess i'd better add some FD work & finance to the list ... & its MOT next month :blast

Some side play is normal.

BTW my vibration was annoying me yesterday with a footrest rattle coming through on rough road joints. so had a closer look at the bike.
The LHS bottom rear engine to frame mounting bolt has gone. F**K !!!

I now have a new M12 x 50 from Ocean BMW and a spare for the useful bits box.
Time will tell if it helps the problem.

BTW I only checked all mounting bolts for tightness a few weeks ago. They were all fine and none moved.

Eck, that sounds a bit worrying! Had it worked loose and dropped out....no thread lock on it?

The other side came loose so both were refitted with threadlock. This one had dropped out and gone. The LHS is pretty well hidden when bike is on side stand so it wasn't spotted.

Another thing to watch closely.

Same happened to me, vibration wasn't bad, but certainly improved when I fitted a new bolt.

Ive always had a coarse vibes through footrests but noticed a shudder through the rests as the bike hit bumps.
