Hi to everyone,
I have done a search on this subject...and it appears to get a regular mention!!!
Firstly the bike.....07 1200 GSA,21000 miles. Had it since last August. Last week noticed a slight oil leak on the rear drive, near to the disc brake. Called out BMW Technician who looked at it,and said it was safe to ride, but get it booked in. The inner seal was leaking. It went in last Thurs for the work to be done.
About an hour later, received a phone call from the BMW garage telling me it needed extra work. New disc brake, pads and rear tyre!! Anyhow...work was completed on the rear drive. I enquired as to what had been done. Apparently, when they took it apart, they had to replace the crown wheel bearings and the seals. It was rumbling badly!!! I had noticed something wrong...then saw the oil leak. I mentioned the fact that the rear drive seems to be a problem on the 1200,and was BMW concerned. The guy replied saying they were fitting stronger bearings. He also said i should not have been riding it!!
Thankfully its fixed now,but i did say to the guy, will these bearings last longer than 21000 miles? He did nt really answer me. Does this mean my rear drive is on the way out? Has it been saved by the new bearings?
