Rear end oil leak!!!!

The rear end diff is leaking oil. I thought I may have been lucky to miss the rear end problems buying an 05 manufactured bike. The bike will be 12 months old this week and has 12500ks. :(

did you do the oz safari btw? - don't recall too many kiwis.
Is the NZ safari on this year?

No we did not get to the Aust safari as BMW NZ did not send our entries in, plus they where to arrange a couple of bikes.

The NZ safari is not on as BMW NZ says its too expensive plus there are to many non BMW owners on the rides so they a going to have one and two day adventure rides through the year. :nenau

I am also heartened to see you are using the 'mag' style rims. Mine came with them, and being used to wire rims I was concerned. I know you use your bike as a real dual purpose, so they must be up to the test.

I get a little worried when they say the diff is non servicable. I would really like to change oils after deep water crossings etc.

Had a similar problem on mine - it pissed oil all over the rear wheel. Turned out to be a minor seal in the final drive that went. Pity it took over three weeks for them to get the special tool to replace the seal.

It's perfectly servicable, although I suspect the reason no one has really investigated much is that all the bikes are still under warranty, so if someone's bearings fail, BMW give them a whole new rear drive. I reckon you'll start hearing more about DIY final drive servicing as the warranties on the earlier bikes expire in early to mid 2006.

As far as water crossings go, the 1200 final drive doesn't have a breather pipe like the older bikes did, hence even when fully submerged (see my avatar!) the oil doesn't seem to get contaminated by water.

Changing the oil in the FD is relatively easy, I'm sure you can find more details by doing a search, but to cut a long story short: Unbolt the telelever arm, let the FD tilt backwards, undo the drain plug (at the back), let the oil out, reassemble the drive shaft and telelever and then refill with oil through the ABS sensor hole. 250ml.

Hi Gonz

The rims have held up well and they can be fixed. The wire rims can not. I do have some small flats spots in the outer rim of the front well, but most people can not pick them up and they are on the very most out lip of the rim. I had the front tyre pressure to low and was on a very rocky road and I was going to fast. The GS just love's gravel 160kph is no trouble on a straight gravel road. I also have a lot of small chips on the rims but they can be filled and the rims painted before I sell the bike.

You do have to use the 1200gs for what it is built for, but I can undrstand why others just like to ride them on the road. BMW have loaned me a new K1200S and what a shit of a bike to ride. There is no confort at all just heaps of power and wind. I can not ride with a open face helmet above 110kph.
 
Great stuff, discovering new things with the 1200, namely how light and competent it is off road. What i dont like is how i second guess myself after spannering on my new bike. It didnt nearly bother me with my 1150.
Now ill keep my eye on the diff.

Have been advised the rear bearing requires replacing, but BMW NZ does not have any in the country. It will not arrive until mid next week.

They have loaned me a new K1200S. At this stage I like the 1200gs. I have to change to a ST tomorrow.

I hope to take the K for a spin tonight, but the short ride home yesterday confirms I own the best BMW bike.
