I'm building a Bitsa from the ground up

I have a 3 stud rear drive that I was sold as being from a GS....Now Ive just brought a wheel and its a Four stud, Definatly an off road...So what rear drive do I have?

I also need a front wheel. I have Showa/BMW forks off a K100 with the larger wheel spindle...Is It possible to get a GS hub this size.... Alternitivly is it possible to get a Talon hub....anyone have experience of these.

Worth it when its done:comfort

3 stud drive is from a monolever possibly R80G/S and the four stud hub is from a paralever, probably R100GS. You'll need to get a matched pair depending on which type of rear suspension you are having

Agree 3 = mono, 4 = para, AFAIK. Can you swap the hubs around? I know the para has tubeless rims and the mono not. I'll guess the answer is along the lines of if you have enough money and time, anything is possible.

BTW I'm happy having tubelss tyres on my bike, but the mono people might like the luxury too.

Is this only a welding job ...ie making up a bracket and welding to match suspension or does spline type etc come into it? I really don't know about paralever arm conversions I dont rate paralever as a system but if I had to I'd change it....:hide

If your opposed to the Paralever; your best option is to sell the 4 stud and search for a 3 stud. Cutting and welding is unlikely to work between mono and para.

With the front wheel; so that you can use a spoked rim in the K (Ali wheel only) forks, you'll need to find a hub that fits as close as possible and then make a spindle to fit it. Probably best to part with these also and find a set from an off road bike. Have a read through the forum, you'll find there's quite a few that can be fitted to the BW frame.

Well as far as I'm aware the paralever bevel box with a 4 stud wheel fixing is only avalable to fit the paralever swinging arm via pivots. I suppose if you were really clever you could machine off the pivots and fit some kind of flange adaptor to fit a monolever but it would be less trouble to find a 3 stud hub to fit your existing bevel box.

If you are building an off roader the monolever is lighter than the paralever which I think is a big advantage. 3 stud wheels are normally not tubeless rims and they are generally 18" not 17" as per paralever. Monolever is also a rod operated brake which is considered better than the cable operated one on the paralever.

The ultimate back end may be the R850/1100GS swinging arm, bevel box and wheel with disc brake that can be fitted to an airhead but at some expense

Thanks everyone...I have arranged to buy an ST wheel. Guess who is selling a really nice Para back wheel soon.
As I said Life will be so boring when this is finished but it will be nice when its done.:augie

I have a spare K front end , and the spindle looks pretty similar to the one on my R100 GS .

However , with the big Brembo calipers you need a narrow hub, like the cross spoked on a GS or R100R or from a G/S with a few spacers and sleeves or a custom spindle. The disks may need realigning too.

James Sherlock is wrecking a GS - he will know what fits what so even if the wheel is gone he should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you want to fit the para back wheel you can do, but you will need a mono bevel box. You then have to machine the hub of the para wheel to bring it nearer the mono bevel box so that the brake shoes are in the correct place. You will then need to check very carefully your tyre to s/a clearance, brackets are easy, one on the s/a and one on the frame. The easiest way is to buy 3 stud wheel and 3 stud bevel box. You could consider using the whole para system but would need to alter the cross bracing on the frame, no biggy but it does alter other things like battery box location.
