Rear light sort out

Why is the rear light so offset so theres a gap with big rubber bushes between it and the mounts? Surely there cant be so much vibration this is needed?
I think it looks pretty shit and am going to attempt some kind of graft so the light fits flush with the back of the bike. Not only does it look shit but its just right for all kinds of crud to get at the completely unprotected wiring.
Is it like that for fitting anything? Do you need to get at those just accessibkle screws?
Is there anything I should know before I attempt to put right this seemingly daft bit of design botching?

Maybe its the same on the 1150?

Doesn't sound stupid to me........I've got a trip to the garage on Monday to have the whole rear light assembly replaced due to corrosion. Will be stripping the new setup down when I get home to gease everything up to stop future corrosion.

I was busy with some bike proctology on sunday and managed to get a more flush mount for my TT rear light. Basically by stripping out all the rubber buffers that the OEM light was mounted on.

Pretty worthless without pics, but it looks better but due to the shaping and design of the rear theres no way to make it watertight without real surgery. And you cant get it totally flush as the metal mounts protrude out of the rear plastics even with the rubber spacers removed.

Fiddling about with this and looking at the rear plastics and the rear light Im convinced that there was meant to be a different and hopefully more sexy ass (ok light) than the one on there. It looks a design botch to me. The rear plastics look like they were designed to house a smaller light.

Well at least now theres no huge gap and visible wiring. And it occupied me for a sunday! However I await with baited breath finding out the reason the OEM one was mounted like it was.....
