Rear pads on NEW GS1200LC

Not a happy bunny, collected noew bike 5th July and returned bike for some warranty work last week. Upon collection I was informed that the bike needed new pads in the rear 4200 miles

Surely this must be a warranty issue Mr BMW dealer? No sir normal wear & tear!

Raised the issue with BMW and after many phone calls they have decided not to replace pads or make any consideration to the cost of replacing the pads. Back to dealer to buy new pads £43.09 later to be told the reason BMW wouldn't contribute was because of the bikes mileage was over 4000.

In thirty two years of riding and fixing motorcycles I have never had a set of pads wear so quickly. In my view they are not fit for purpose and should be replaced under warranty. Off to speak to training standards and see if they agree and will act under the sale of goods act.

They should last between service intervals at least

Never changed pads less than 9K before and that was rear pads on my 05 GS

There's another thread on here where people are saying their pads are being replaced under warranty - suggest you take a copy of the thread to your dealer.

I won't buy pads from the dealer. I was quoted £49 when I enquired about buying a set. I got genuine Brembo pads from Bike Torque Racing for half that price.

Have you got the part number they don't list the R1200GS 2013- on their site

The Brembo Site recommends 07BB0330 although there are several different compounds available.
The ones I ordered were 07BB0335 which was the next compound up from the recommended ones. They are by coincidence the ones used in the G650GS.

4500 miles from new... 2nd March and my pads are I think less than 1/2 worn.

Bring back asbestos I say!!!

I'm guessing linked brakes, when you apply pressure to the rear pedal it's just adding to the work it's doing courtesy of the front lever. Makes for more rear brake effort than might otherwise be the case.

I wouldn't waste your breath .... just fit some new pads yourself and ride the thing

This might very well be a load of bollocks, but the mechanic at my local dealer said that the linked braking balance between front/rear brakes varies with speed, and at lower speeds the braking balance is biased more heavily to the rear brake. (It's certainly the case that when I'm braking from walking speed to standstill I can really feel the rear working). He said that if your miles involve braking from lower speeds eg in traffic then you get higher rear pad wear. (I'm an ex sportsbiker rider like many on here I think, and as a consequence I virtually never use the rear brake).

When I first started riding GS's back in '04 I used to go through rear pads at ~4,000 mile mark. Now they seem to last forever. I was far to heavy on the rear brake.

Mine were changed at 4500 miles under warrantee
now done a further 4500 miles and replacements are still like new.
Looks like sub standard material was used for original set.

Due to the reports of the rear pads wearing out prematurely I brought a set of EBC pads from Nippy Normans £23
checked my pads and they are fine ive done 6000 miles and I would guess it will be another 6000 before I need to change them.

So Ive already got my replacement set.

My 90th GSA has 5000 miles done and rear pads look good for at least the same again.? (ie not really worn )

And its got to be a heavier bike, more than 60% of the miles have been with full luggage as well.?

So there must be an issue with the WC, but yes I would bother with trading standards for £43 quid.

My dealer says the replacements are exactly the same material as the originals. He claims the second set don't appear to wear as quickly as the first.
