Anyone got any advise on rear shock, I need to get one for my bike and wonder what folks think is best option?

Will any other shock fit from GS range or others?

Thanks in advance

shock

ive got a wp shock on mine , only got compression damping , but i can't fault it.

Buy as good as you can afford -White Power or Ohlins etc. Properly set up it will transform your bike :thumb
If you are on a budget a suspension guru may be able to rebuild and respring your old shock to your specs.

I had a white powe rshck on for years and cannot fault it .If your'e on a budget you can just replace the damper unit
cheers C'n'C

I had my original rebuilt and it was a disaster didn't last at all I highly recomend Hagon some people seem to slag them off, but the shockers do the job, they are rebuildable, and the customer service is good and they are much cheaper than the competition.

Wilburs is also another option.

I've gone thru the options lately for my 91 R80GS.
From a lot of research the only ones really up for the job are Wilbers or Ohlins. The rest aren't up to it. WP is another option however I haven't found any for sale anywhere for our bikes.

The basic models are the Ohlins

Hyper Pro is becoming very popoular and a more sensible price than any of the above.

I have a Wilbers on mine. I've bought them before and find them pretty mediocre, slightly better than a Hagon.

I rode Pastyman's old bike, Bertha, with the Ohlins fitted straight after getting off mine. The Ohlins is in a different league to the Wilbers.

My Favourite shocks are Maxtons. beautifully made and work a treat. Made in Cheshire. The last one I bought was Around £500. A full rebuild was £55. http://www.maxtonsuspension.co.uk/

Shocks

Checked out Hyperpro.
Purple springs- I can't get past those I'm afraid

If you don't like the colour it doesnt stop you changing it........ the colour doesn't detract from the ability of the shock...... does it?

My original shock is dripping oil now at about 53000 miles. Can I rebuild it is is it welded together and just fit for the bin.

An Ohlins rear shock will transform the bike. I've used the adjustable version for years. Pricy though.

Most shocks can be rebuilt at a price. I was advised on a K1 shock that the seals were odd sizes and not off the shelf items so a rebuild would cost about the same as a replacement. Get a quote first before rebuilding.

If you can afford it an aftermarket shock set up to your weight and riding style is the best option IMO.

I've tried the lot except Maxtons, and none are even close to an Ohlins.

Even the GBP100- Ebay home brewed special I bought after a tip of on this forum is a mile in front of the WP which the PO had "Professionally" fitted and set up.

Might try Maxtons for a pair for the R75/7, as the are a lot cheaper than Ohlins and are custom built to your specs.

They look the goods - have you had a price from them yet?

Actually , I am surprised to see them, as it wasn't that long ago that one of the guys on ADV enquired about cartridges to replicate the " HPN " inserts for the GS forks, and received a rather negative reply, dismissing the possibility that they would ever offer anything similar.

Maybe the just wanted to surprise everybody-----.
