Rear shock - odd behaviour

Hello

I reckon i may have a problem with the rear shock. Its a bit of an odd one, as its not going wrong in the usual "loss of damping" manner that shocks usually fail in; but it seems that the preload isnt working.

Now, my memory is that if i stuck the preload up to "high", then with just me on the bike i was balls of my feet on the floor only (I'm 6'1"), but no way was i getting my feet flat. Now i can comfortably get my feet flat - and i havent bought high heel boots...

The back of the bike generally seems to be sitting low too. At first i thought it was the seat, but i'm pretty convinced its the shock.

So - anyone heard of this from a GS shock? Maybe its new to me, but not to everyone else. Second, can the gs shocks be rebuilt or am i going to have to give Mr Ohlins a call for one of his budget items? :)

thanks

I have had to increase preload a bit as the shock seemed to ease during the running period. At 6' 3'' and 16 stone I still only need the pre-load set to the medium line where the bike behaves perfectly.

Have dropped the front shock by one notch as well.

Don't think you need to raid the piggy bank yet for Mr Olins retirement fund, your bike must still be under warranty.

Nah - over two years old and i bought it second hand

Can you get both feet easily flat on the floor when it's set to the medium position?

(i'm a mere 13st, so if you cant get your feet flat, then there's obviously problem if i can being shorter, lighter and having more preload on...)

Sounds like the hydraulic pre-load adjuster has given up the ghost. Any leaks?

Link above for a rebuild, or, if I remember correctly, Caledonian Engineering in Glasgow can have a look for you.

thanks - i'll check out allbikes

LRR - there are no obvious leaks, but i guess the amount of fluid over the course of a number of months would be minimal, so very hard to spot. I did try a clean, dry jump up and down and and go over with a clothm but nothing there.

Is the preload adjuster actually hydraulic? I assume you're talking about an 1150, which I don't know about, but on the 1200 the adjuster looks like it's simply mechanically coupled to the top of the shock.

I am guessing it's an arrangement like a worm gear, which may have stripped its teeth ...
